How was the transition? I'm tempted to switch over and use the guides here to block the M$ junkiness.

My main concern is since I have too much junk to do a clean install, is the update install decent? How bad am I screwed and is there a better way?

I can use that Win10 Pro key that I have saved.

Windows 8.1 Pro will auto activate during the upgrade... at least if they are still giving it away. Also, the upgrade from 8.1 is pretty painless. About as painless as it gets. I did it pretty easily, and I hate upgrades.

That said, the ms spying junk removal is by far the hardest part. And stopping auto driver updates. Once you get those under control, it's fine.

Benchmark Scores I dont have time for that.
I have worked on a few hundred machines that have been in place upgrades, from my experience more than 50% run into issues. Thats said all of my personal machines upgraded fine, though I did do fresh formats on them eventually.

The biggest issues that cause problems with the upgrades are.

Free space

Anti virus software

Infections

Corruption with the OS.

To improve your chances I would uninstall the AV before doing the upgrade. I would obviously scan first to make sure your machine isnt tainted. Then I would run an SFC /scannow so that needed files used by the procedure arent damaged. That should increase your chances of it going well. Atleast from my experience.

Alot of the issues specifically laptops and new desktops exhibit AFTER the upgrade are network drivers missing (looking at you qualcomm/i219v), so to be safe id toss those on a USB.

Ive made the switch 5 or so times, it loses less programs now than it used to,and it is fairly easy, but i already regret it.

Just make a back up of 7, and when or if it goes 2 shit, u can change back

I don't run any antivirus so the above may be a very legit list of things to consider. Actually, to be dead honest minus games and office my machine is pretty barebones.

I want to do an upgrade as well, but I don't want to upgrade my Windows 7 key as I have a Windows 10 key too. I'm worried the Win7 key will become a Win10 key if I just upgrade.

With that said, so far the upgrades I've seen have worked out nicely. Some people have had minor issues, like tablet mode being activated on first launch, but generally it seems to work ok. At work they use a CAD program with an ancient CAD engine (really, really ancient), and even that just works. The real reason I want to upgrade is because then I get to keep the keyboard shortcuts I've associated with programs in the Start meny, in Windows 10 you have to add the shortcuts to the desktop if you want to make keyboard shortcuts.

I upgraded my main rig from 8.1 to 10 when my upgrade was first available. I have never run into any troubles and I am still running that same upgrade. Haven't had the need to do a clean install.

All of my PCs, laptops, and other family PCs have been upgraded to Win 10 now. Total count is about 9 inclduing 3 laptops.

Since I don't care at all about automatic updates, I am fine with Win 10 and didn't cost me a single penny and personally I haven't run into any big issues. Minor issues, yes, but MS has fixed them. But I don't have many programs on my rigs.
On my main rig, I just have Blender, Paint.Net, GIMP, Firefox, Chrome, and few other programs and that's it. Nothing to go wrong, I suppose.

I also upgraded some of business machines to Win 10 from Win 7 upon request. Haven't run into any issues.

No one has "too much" installed to do a fresh install. I had tons of programs. Yes, it took me days to get everything installed that I wanted. In the long run, it's going to serve you alot longer and less painfully than just leaving it as an "upgrade".

Seems kinda split depending on what someone has on their drives.

I only have programs and the OS on my SSD, all games, videos, and documents are on different HDDs so that will be fine I suppose.

I do have my Win8.1 ISO backed up so if I really need to revert I can do a clean install. Updates though.. Ugh.

I need more data guys! Added a poll in too.

I put off the upgrade for my desktop till only a few weeks ago. For me everything went smoothly except my wifi management software for my motherboard's wifi won't work (not a big deal as it still works without it). Nothing else went bad though.

The Win10 upgrade for my Gigabyte laptop went smoothly but my HP still has some intermittent issues that only arose since the upgrade (touchscreen sometimes doesn't work, wifi cuts out spontaneously etc).

I'm worried the Win7 key will become a Win10 key if I just upgrade.

It doesn't. It simply adds you to a hardware activated whitelist with a generic key. Your Windows 7 key will still work.

EDIT: That poll... I'm not beautiful. I'm a fat guy. Seriously people. I sit in an armchair all day and play videogames. I am the anti-beauty.

OS is good, only things that really make it annoying to use are:
- no easy way of disabling all the tracking nonsense (which is even more problematic on devices like tablets because it drains batter like insane)
- Windows Update that just downloads and installs everything without giving power users any kind of control. This especially applies to god damn drivers.

Both can be "solved" by using O&O ShutUp 10 and Windows Update MiniTool, but it's all unnecessary work where OS itself could be designed well. But instead, this part just isn't. Other than that I don't have any complaints anymore.

I only had one issue when I upgraded back in September: I had so many programs installed that the Start Menu couldn't handle them all. They probably got that fixed by now.

The rest of the issues are Microsoft Edge related. They're still not fixed. If you don't intend to use Edge then fuggitaboutit.

I in-place-upgraded about a dozen machines total. Those are the only things I can think of off the top of my head.

Edit: FYI, doing a clean install and update of Windows 10 takes less than an hour. And that's on a Core 2 Duo, installing from DVD to HDD, and downloading via 3 mbps connection.

In-place-upgrade takes longer.

What i'd be interested in knowing is, how many people actually pay for Windows. If i had to guess, probably 30% pay. Anyone think different?

It depends if we count China, Russia and India in.

Most peps usually now buy laptops with OS included. The big towers are not that popular anymore. Those actually who buy big machines, can afford an OS too. IMHO most expensive thing is the office package not the OS.

BTW I am on Win10 since the first beta and never really went off the insider builds. Somehow I manage. If some problems are there, it is only a worthy experience.

First warning... don't upgrade if you have Broadcom or Atheros devices... they still do not have proper drivers... but it has been always like that.

Tried to upgrade 3 times and 2 times a clean install on my windows 7 laptop, every time windows froze up even with installing on a new SSD.
I probably need a new BIOS, but since this is an older laptop (Asus N53JQ) there are no new BIOS'es available.

All my other computers are running windows 8.1/xp/7, not upgrading them to windows 10.

Funny, few weeks ago installed N53SM without issues... hmm just get the upgrade ticket to activate manually after and do a clean install of win10 too, then put the ticket in the right folder and it becomes valid and active.

You can try to upgrade MEI too, see in winraid if it ain't locked, see the latest version in your branch, ie guess the 8.1 or 7. Also try plugging out the wifi adapter... it is the atheros one, ain't it?

On the Asus website there are only drivers available for windows 7:

Not sure which wifi adapter is in it.

I will make recovery dvd's soon and reinstall windows 7 on the SSD I bought recently.
This will surely give it a boost even it's just sata II, since the current drive is a slow 5400rpm drive:p

That's for sure. But if no gaming is done on it, I would suggest using linux. It would be even more faster. Just don't forget AHCI on. It had the option in bios for that, at least on the SM.

Laptops usually give more headache no matter what OS they reside on. Something always craps out. Bluetooth, trackpad buggy, sound and jack config, ultimately fail wifi cards working slower than my phone does.

I will toss out the HDD and replace it with the SDD I have and install windows 7 on it and give it to my dad, me nor my dad know nothing about linux:p
If I were to keep it for myself I might have tried it, thanks for the suggestion though.

I had to do upgrade as the copy of 7 64bit OEM got locked out on me, I do a lot of hardware swapping mostly motherboards. So I bought a 10 64bit, I was worried as you get used to things being a certain way. I must say I've not had one issue so far(knocks on wood), and for now on when testing I'll just use safe mode. I got 2 code's from that free give away(neither worked)when I asked him he accused me of selling them and trying to make a buck off it! He said he activated them on VR machines and were both valid, must be my area I don't know. But that dude came off out of left field made accusations like I'm some thief, pretty much gave me insight as to who n what he is......
