hello, i have an Abit AW9D Max that i acquired recently, and when i plug it in, the digital display on the mobo displays 2, and then goes to 00. when i try to start it, it either displays 8.2. or 8.4. and then shuts off. this alternates, and when 8.2. is displayed, it wont turn back on unless i unplug it and plug it back in. can anyone tell me what is wrong with the mobo and if so, how to fix it please? thank you :)

Try resetting the bios (CMOS).

Edit:

Also, the 2. and the 0.0. should just be the boards Code Revision and the Board ID.

See, here at the bottom of the page: POST code indication
The list cadaveca post has more codes on it though.

The 8.2 and 8.4 are the error codes.

You might want to, also, reseat your memory, check that you have the correct voltages and settings for them.
Check that the PSU is operating as to specs, too.
Check and recheck all your power connections on the system.

That board is form an older era of hardware when PSU specifications were different. If you have an old PSU laying around, try it.

i tried the oldest Power Supply i have and the board did the same thing... it may be either too old and just quit, but i know the previous owner booted it up before he gave it to me, he ran a diagnostic test of some sort on the BIOS or something... i forget exactly what it was called, but he didnt let it finish the test...

Did he try to flash it? Or, flash the bios/firmware?

Might want to check ram. going by the POST code list, 8.2 is power supply, 8.4 is memory.

95Viper's suggestions are pretty good TBH.

i want to flash the bios, but i dont know if there is a specific key code (i've never flashed a bios before) and i thought that might have been the problem, so i tried each pair i have, and its all the same result

Not trying to brush you off or anything; however, you need to familiarize yourself with the board and parts.
Read the manual first: AW9D-MAX manual download page
What version of the bios is on your MB and does the newer ones look to fix any problems you have: Bios info/download page

AW9D-MAX page

Edit:

Be sure to try the BIOS(CMOS) reset.

Also, try one stick of memory and try to get into the bios to check the settings.

Can I give you a tip? Change the battery.
Any Abit board with uGuru on it is a battery whore. If the battery is any less than 2.9v, the uGuru boards balk and weird crap happens.
You need at least bios #16. If you're not on that one you'll need to flash it once you have the board up and running.
