Well then this sucks big time, how can a 69$ cooler have this many issues, the biggest with vrm temps!

If you got a 55nm GTX 260 or 285, Those Thermalright VRM Heatsinks I posted above will most likely work, and I'm using them for my Thermalright HR-03 GTX and I never break 80C on the VRM's.

Ohhhhh!! I wanna know what their response was or is!

Yeah, my friend was ready to buy 2 of these, but after seeing the VRM Temps from this mini review he strayed away haha

Very good work. Answered alot of questions for me. How exactly did you attach the stock backplate? Since the screws aren't going into the stock cooler anymore. Also the 4 screws around the gpu for the heatsink do the hold well through the backplate? Would I have to worry about cracking the backplate? I have been wondering if you could even use it since it does look much better than that odd blue one.

Great review :rockout:

Thanks :)

Stock backplate is attached with the 4 Accelero screws. They have a lip in them so they work fine with the backplate, which is metal and not going to crack anytime soon :)

Oh and the supplied backplate isn't blue. Just has a protective film on top of it. It's aluminum color, like the VRM sink which I took the film off.

Good stuff, thanks. Either way the supplied backplate is a turn off. It looks really good with the stock backplate. Seriously, good work. Does the stock backplate make good contact with the memory chips? Did you use the stock thermal pads?

Sorry for all of the questions but you just sold me on this cooler. As soon as I can find one I'm going to order.

It's with the stock pads and makes plenty of contact. Nothing really changes on the backplate prospective. It rested on the screw holes standoffs like before, only the screws are different color and don't have springs in them :)

And you could always add a bit of silicon paste or reshape the original thermal pads, if they feel too flat. You could also use the supplied thermal pads but I like the stock ones better, because it's easy to take off. Granted you don't really need to take the backplate off ever, unless you want to get the NVIO heatsink off, as it's 2 screws are behind it.

Hi All...

First of all thanks for the review... very informative and confirms others early findings....

Secondly how about you remove your cool ghetto mod and send it off to a metalworks where it can be moulded in copper and then get us guys to chip in some $$$ and get a batch done?

I know at where at least 5 of these hacked sinks are needed right now :)

I could use 2 or 3 myself for my 2 280ssc's and 1 ftw...

Thanks OP for a fantastic review and real world solutions. I have used cards so no need for warentee...

I am seriously thinking of doing ths mod on the 2 ssc's i have.....
but i will wait a bit and see what developes...

They could probably do it.

Copper sink of that would be pretty special (+pricey), wouldn't mind owning one. Thermaltake HR-03 GTX has been around ages and it could have used one too. Yet none have come. Maybe it was the 4 slots that kept it getting too popular and now with Accelero's 3 slots and poorer VRM solution it would have more need.

Been enjoying this thread, OnBoard.
You have done a superb review of the Accelero, and it's a great thread:toast:
Although it may be an apples-to-oranges comparison, I am going to try to duplicate some of your temperature testing to compare my vrm temps with the HR-03 GTX and Enzo sinks to your Accelero. I have run FurMark a few times but with different settings, with similar results except the maximums didn't go as high, but that was not with the included vrm plate. Not intended to be a competition but rather a study of how to reduce the vrm temps. when not using either cooler's stock crappy aluminum vrm plate:rolleyes:

Do post your results here, once you're done. It's all good, just gives people more options on what to do. Those FurMark runs of mine were 640x480 180s stability in window. If you like to do some other resolution (1680x1050 max) and with some OC, I can run those too to compare more.

Just nothing too insane OCs, I don't know this cards limits :D Ran some Cryostasis with GTX 275 clock speeds and core topped out @ 70c and VRMs somewhere 80-90C (not counting the 127C spikes, everyone seems to be getting).

I can't wait to see this. I want to pick up this Accelero Xtreme whenever I can find it with the stock backplate, looks really good btw, and steal Retro's idea to use the enzotech sinks on the vrms (he got really impressive results).

Unwinder said that the upper limits on the vrms on these cards is around 150c. I wouldn't feel comfortable running those temps, but I trust what the man says.

Thanks for posting your FurMark settings, I shall make sure I use those. Excellent temp. results from that modded Accelero! And yes, I have also had some spikes, seems to be the nature of the beast.

Good for you BababooeyHTJ, looks like Jason is going to do the same. He has a really well-organized plan for the additional Enzotech sinks to use, just as you do.
I was surprised to see that his cost estimate for the works was about 80 bucks less than I paid for the HR-03 GTX and parts. Damn good value there!

I hope those Accelero coolers are available soon, even though my work is done! But I sure am impressed with their performance, and they look damn good too. Put some Enzo's on it, or cut the stock plate, whatever you like! Looking forward to seeing your project. OnBoard has certainly given a great guide on what to do with this fine cooler, and some good tests to compare to.

150's eh? Well, you don't want to doubt Unwinder! I agree that this is a realistic upper limit for the vrm's, not one I want to be hitting very often! It's good that we are able to do something about it!

Stock cooler VRM part + Noctua NT-H1, 21C ambient:

Do remember that core voltage plays a big role in the VRM temps, if you have a GTX 260 your temperatures will be automatically lower. I did a 1.1250V run on FurMark with the previous VRM sink and temps dropped 15C. I'll try later if I can get the card working with 1.0630V that 260s have.

Sorry took a while, but finally did the 1.0625V run on FurMark. Lowered my stock voltage to 1,15V in bios earlier and did some undervolting before it, so it was the right time. Got the same temps with the 1,15V as with 1,1875V, but spring is here and ambient temperature went up 2C.

Stock cooler VRM part + Noctua NT-H1, 23C ambient:

So that's an additional 10C or 10% temperature drop on the VRM with the lower voltage. This is for all you GTX 260 peeps that have lower 3D voltage than GTX 280 owners.

Overclocking has a reverse effect, shader clocks especially affect the VRM temps. So drop some voltage if you don't want overly high temps again :)

To be honest with those furmark runs at that resolution I'm not too impressed with the Accellero or the cut off stock vrm plate solution. If I wasn't so vain I would just go for the HR-03 but I really like the option of using the stock backplate.

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showpost.php?p=3751725&postcount=127

You could have just asked, instead of "dissing" on another forum :ohwell: I ran on the 640x480 resolution to keep screenshots small, actual resolution didn't have much impact on temps.

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showpost.php?p=3703061&postcount=91

This is to compare with Retro's (above) run of 1680x1050 16xAA and OC. Sorry my memory doesn't go that high.

edit: so 66C vs 71C, but Retro has 1.2V that heats up VRM and core more. I'm not going to use above stock voltage for my card anymore :)

Ok folks....

Just got hold of one of these puppies and fitted it to my GTX 280...

After 10 mins of Furmark the GPU tops out at 57 centigrade which is a good reduction on the 85 degrees or so that i was getting with stock and the vrms maxed out at 107 degrees (102 stock) on the same run (18 degrees ambient)...

Pretty impressive but I wanted those vrms down so i fitted the Enzotech Mos-c1 heatsinks instead of the supplied vrm heatsink to see if they made a difference... and they did!

In the same test rerun the hottest topped out at 84 degrees - 23 degrees lower so a good choice imo...

3 things to note though:

1: The Enzotech mini sinks are just too long to fit snugly.... if you fit them as they come they are about 2.5-3 mm too long and force the pcb to bend slightly (bad) so be prepared to shave a few mm off them to get a good fit!

2: At the other end of the card the multimedia port snags slightly on a few of the accelero's fins and causes a slight pcb bend as well... so be prepared to trim two or three of the fins here too...

3: The 2 ramsinks supplied are not very sticky so prepare for some frustration (!)

Other than that : :rockout:

2: at the other end of the card the multimedia port snags slightly on a few of the accelero's fins and causes a slight pcb bend as well... so be prepared to trim two of the fins here too...

Other than that : :rockout:

Forgot to mention that, bended a couple fins, as they rested on the tv-out port, like you said. Didn't really affect temps or the card, but better to be safe than sorry.

You could have just asked, instead of "dissing" on another forum :ohwell: I ran on the 640x480 resolution to keep screenshots small, actual resolution didn't have much impact on temps.

Thanks for posting those comparison tests, OnBoard!
Those are certainly worst-case results with the evil Furmark abusing the cards at those high settings:p
I was experimenting with EVGA's Voltage Tuner then. I currently run it lower now, often with just the stock voltage. Still not really sure if it makes any difference for my clocks over the default voltage though. In theory it should help, but I don't think a lot of extra juice is needed for what I do.

I did run some comparisons with your early tests a while ago but noticed your framerates were quite a bit higher. When I bumped up the performance settings to get similar framerates, the vrm temps on my card went up to about the same level as yours. But I think a couple of the readings were up to 4 degrees higher on mine.

Your latest tests have provided some valuable information. I will conclude that your card does better than mine for temperature reduction overall:toast: when really stressing it out. And this is for all of the temperature readouts, the gpu itself, and the vrm's.

Your use of the stock backplate and cutting off the stock vrm section for the card was brilliant. The results have proven how well that works and it really is a cure for the higher temps from the less-effective plate that comes with the Accelero (or the Thermalright for that matter).

The other benefits of using the Accelero with your mods is that it takes up less space as it is already needing one less slot than the HR-03 GTX. Although subjective, I think the Accelero looks a lot better than the chunky HR-03.

There is not so much interest in the HR-03 GTX on the forums now. But plenty of enthusiasm for the Accelero, there will continue to be lots of posts about this fine cooler from AC as it becomes more widely available. So be ready to continue helping them:)

I haven't really altered the default NVIDIA settings, other than pre-rendered frames to 2. Read it helps with mouse lag, though I haven't really experienced it :) Rest of the settings in the picture below.

You should try undervolting. I run @ 1.15V now and 1.125V was even stable with OCs. Left some room for bios, as 1.125V wasn't stable with 1566 shaders. 3DMark Vantage crashed with those shaders even with stock voltage, so less is more :)

And I think the Enzotech sinks are a better solution :D Looking at Biker's results and they are fantastic. Although his ambient is low and even with the Accelero VRM sink getting great temps. I'm sort of thinking that my VRM's run hotter than usual, as they were already 100C with stock cooler?

Thanks, I did it really out of a must, those Enzotech mosfet thingies aren't really available here and didn't want to spend more money. Plus it was fun and I had no use for the stock cooler (though it still works just fine if I remove the Accelero and leave the VRM part there).

Personally I really like the look of the HR-03 GTX and it would have gone nicely with my Thermalright Ultima-90 :) I just wanted to keep my other PCI-E slot free and have the weight of the cooler closer to the card. Although the stock backplate should work with the HR-03 GTX too, if not with the pushpins.

Yeah, questions welcome here, once it's released in USA too. Europe seems quite well covered now. Recent introduction of GTX 275 will surely bring more interest to the cooler, seeing how hot it runs. And even better with it's cool VRMs this or your cooler will work great.
