Well, I used some Arctic Silver thermal adhesive on the heatsinks that wouldn't stick and bought a LIAN LI PC-A05NB (been wanting one for awhile). Even though its about three inches shorter than the Antec 300 the "upside down" arrangement inside will easily accommodate the GTX Pro. I'll transfer all my gear from the 300 to it tomorrow and test the temps on the GTX 260.

time for the accelero 480 thread? :)

Hehee, might be, although I'm not getting a GTX470 or 480. But those cards are Screaming for a Accelero Xtreme. Can't wait to see the amazement when loads drop 30C

Talk that GTX 460 would use same PCB as GTX 470 could mean that next Accelero Xtreme is compatible with it as well? But TwinTurpo Pro might be a cheaper better choice for it.

Oh and "lurking here" was just for this thread, not TPU in general. Not going anywhere.

This is what I have now (if someone is interested). Could have been fun to use GTX 280 as PhysX card with this on top slot :D (order by oldest)

Got the Accelero GTX Pro in that small case with no issue (and room to spare!). I should be good hardware-wise for at least a year now. Idle temps are 32C for the CPU and 36C for the GPU and load (well, heavy gaming) are 40C and 53C. These are in a cool room with the stock 40%/auto fan setting. Not bad!

Interesting observation, the fan speed doesn't seem to matter. I can leave it on auto/40% or set it manually to 80% and the temps while gaming are exactly the same. I am surprised how quiet the tri-fans are - much more so than the Accelero Extreme on my 8800 GTX (although cranking up the speed does result in much better cooling on that card). With the GTX 260 at 80% the fan noise is only slightly higher than auto.

Well it's a beast :) You need to overclock more, to give it more heat and you'll see difference in fan speed too. But it's good to have reserve, once summer is here, temps go up.

Its frustrating. My factory settings for the GTX 260 are 650/1400/1000 and I can't get higher than about 680/1450/1200 without artifacts or freezing (even though the card stays cool - no higher than 56C). Its an "o.k." overclock, but it would be nice to get up to 700-725.

Check out this rivatuner screenshot after playing Serous Sam HD TSE for a couple of minutes. Yes, that is with an HR-03 GTX, unisink, and a 1900rpm S-flex.

Hmm high and weird.

:wtf:

How does it perform compared to the 280?

12.5% worse with Vantage game tests :) And I'd think it's pretty spot on for games too. Can't run BC2 as high settings, but not much lower either (ATI runs that game better).

This is just a card to keep me going untill GTX 460 or HD 5850. If 460 is cool I'd get that, but hoping it would drop 5850 price. If it doesn't then it would be same to get 5850 now, but it's horribly priced. Don't feel like paying more for it than I did of 280.

So at the moment I'm stuck with this, but you notice half the wattage when room temperature doesn't rise like it did with 280 :p

Don't worry I can't run BFBC2 on high either, not comfortably.

Don't feel like paying more for it than I did of 280.

This is exactly whats kept me from upgrading. I can't see spending 25% more than I paid for the 280 over a year and a half ago for a 5870.

Hey Babs:)
The high vrm temps rears it's ugly head again!
Kind of glad I can't read mine, I don't want to know what they are:D
I've got SS HD as well, brings back memories from when I had SS1 and 2 a few years ago. Still a fun game.
I was going to suggest something I did on my 280/HR-03 a while back. I experimented with some different fan combos, the most effective for me was when I mounted TWO Skythe 120's on the HR-03 with straps. There is a photo somewhere back in this enormous thread. It seemed to help the overall cooling.
Another suggestion would be to use one honkin' 120x38mm fan such as a Panaflow M1 for more airflow compared to the single Skythe fan. That worked better for me when I tested it on the T-Rad2 I tried.

Just a thought anyhow. As for me, I still have the 275sli setup, but I am using the stock coolers for now because I had to rma one of the 275's that PSOD'ed then died shortly after I installed the infamous Nvidia 196.75 card killer driver. Both cards were working great before. EVGA sent a working 275 pronto, no issues after that. With a different driver, of course:shadedshu

Looks like OnBoard is not going to have any heat issues for now, that 5770 is a slick, cool-running card, even better with his custom sink job, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
Hopefully you can get those temps down, but there is only so much you can do to cool a 280, on air anyway:rolleyes:

I'm not sure what happened but look at the core voltage in that pic. When I went back to play the game I didn't see any of those kind of temps, thankfully.

I wonder what could have caused that?

I'm glad that I installed the HR-03 since that driver didn't really effect me. It sucks to unexpectedly lose a card. Hopefully the replacement will be a good performer. How long did that driver take to kill the card?

Crank up the voltage ;) max 1.30v with good cooling :) I remember I had 1.80v on my GTX280 lol

Maybe some kind of spike? Main thing is that your temps. are ok now.

The 196.75 card killer driver was said to stop the fan, but I had the Accelero on it when it died. Not blaming the cooler for sure, like you said you were glad to have the HR-03 when you tried it. The fans were spinning when the card had gone to the black screen stage. I can't say for sure if it was the driver that killed one of the 275's or it was just a bad card, but there were none of the usual symptoms of a bad card before, such as high temps. or any artifacting, nothing. I had the driver installed for only a few hours, and probably ran it for less than two hours. But the card didn't exhibit any symptoms, and ran fine on the 196.75 driver. It didn't die until the next day, when I started up the computer, there was the PSOD, a crazy totally garbled display exactly as those shown in the threads about the killer driver. That lasted only a few seconds then nothing, a total black display. Switched the cards around, still no display until I removed what was gpu1 and the second surviving card worked normally.
Coincidence? Who knows.

But the EVGA replacement card works fine, it overclocks about the same as the other card.
Not in any rush to go to the next gen., either Nvidia or ATI, just yet:D

Sorry to be an idiot (but I am ;)), but how do you get the VRAM temps to show on GPU-Z? I see them in the screenshots at the beginning of this thread, but the latest version of GPU-Z doesn't show it for my card. Is there something I'm missing?

If it's 55nm it doesn't show those. Only 65nm GTX 260/280 has volterra and VRM readouts.

Thanks OnBoard. Guess I'll have to just assume those heatsinks are stuck on there well. ;)

I had the same concerns too Jeff. They definitely aren't the most sticky things, but I had them sitting upside down and was shaking the whole thing for a while before I put it in. I think as long as no direct pressure is put on them, they will be just fine.

was asked to move my thread over here, so I'll just jump in ...

If it's 55nm it doesn't show those. Only 65nm GTX 260/280 has volterra and VRM readouts.

You can also use RivaTuner and download the VT1165 plug-in (comes with install instructions - very easy to do) and it will show VRM Phase readouts like GPU-z but I like the RivaTuner graph readouts much better than GPU-z

The VRM temps confused me for a while, and info online seemed very slim to none about them or the temp readouts in GPU-z labelled VDDC so here's a quick rundown ...

VRM stands for Voltage Regulator Module and a short, informative tutorial can be found at

http://www.geeks3d.com/20100504/tutorial-graphics-cards-voltage-regulator-modules-vrm-explained/

a VRM is a DC-DC converter and is also called a buck converter

a brief tutorial ...

A VRM can be divided in three parts: the logic device, the power device and the filtering device.

The logic device, also called voltage controller, drives the power device in order to supply the GPU with the correct voltage and current. The voltage controller is the brain of VRM.

The power device is the VRM muscles and are made up to power MOSFET (Metal-Oxyd Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor). A MOSFET is power switching element and is one of the most common transistor type in electronics.

The filtering device allows to smooth the MOSFET output current and is made up of inductors and capacitors.

A phase is made up of a power device and a filtering device. The phase allows to simplify the description of a VRM: a VRM is made up of a voltage controller and several phases

the mystery surrounding VRM has finaly been revealed

Also, for those souls who are interested ...

NVidia Input/Output (NVIO) chip provides dual 400MHz RAMDAC signals for the GPU, dual - "dual" Link DVI output, as well as TV-out and HDCP support

now we know why that chip is there

GTX260 65nm GPU has five phase VRM: two for memory (which have no temp sensors) and three for the GPU

GTX280 65nm GPU has seven phase VRM: two for memory (which have no temp sensors) and five for the GPU

that's all I know for sure right now regarding the different GTX models - Thanks for that info OnBoard (and especially for this thread on the Accelero GTX cooler)

Good stuff bear2790 :) Tell how the installation and temperatures go, once you get all the parts.

How does the mounting hole distance compare to GTX 285?

Accelero Extreme for 470/480 should be easy if they just force you to use the original cooler bottom :) Think they'll include sinks though, but of course you won't have to use them.

I just dropped one of these on my 260 gtx and the new version fits like a glove and is worth every cent. My card doesn't break 55c in games. My 260 gtx 55nm only does 702/1477/2100 because it is the lame ass new PCB design but still it runs chilly. FYI in most games it was hitting near 80c and was loud. Now it's cool and near silent. Also my core now overclocks occt stable about 30 mhz more and 25 mhz on the shaders, with two chokes gone and six vrms gone these fuxxks get hotter and don't oc near aswell. Still allot faster than stock clock of 590/1296/ 2000.

See how it looks, a mauled 275 gtx pcb. Take a look at the blanked out middle power regulation area near the front of the card dead center. I couldn't believe what I was seeing when I removed the stock heatsink a few days ago.
