Bought it today, played 34 minutes, requested a refund on Steam.

No HOTAS or flight stick support, supposedly a bug. Flight in it with a mouse and keyboard is atrocious.
No ultrawide resolution support. No idea if this is a bug or by design.
Graphics didn't impress me at all.

I was pretty hyped for this game. I hope it gets patched and gets better.

I was gonna try to play it with a controller. I'm used to that, having played previous Ace Combat games on PS1 and PS2.

Supposedly gamepads works, but I don't have one. I haven't played an Ace Combat game since the PS1 days and was pretty stoked to see this coming to PC.

Apparently the console version is better than the last game. Make of that what you will.

EDIT: Oh, and the story is utter trash.

Never really expected it to be a flight sim. It's always been a console arcade game and the first time it's on the PC.
I run ultra-wide and I don't really care if games don't support ultra-wide. I run games in 2560x1440 if it doesn't do ultrawide. Ultrawide support is supposed to be coming.
It's console graphics for a console port, but at a higher res.

I used to play Tom Clancy's HAWX on Xbox 360 and loved that game and i was looking at this to scratch the fighter plane itch, but also saw bad reviews on steam and eeh it's £50 so yeah, no buy.. I would play with xbox 360 controller as i don't have a joy stick though.

Played for about three hours. It is a pretty good port. Runs great with no issues. So far it is far less buggy than most AAA games true to Ace Combat style of being highly polished. This is nowhere near Assassin Creed level port quality. The only downside that I can see is currently no ultra wide support but that appears to be a common trend in Japanese games like MGSV and Ace Combat. I believe there is also no mouse control in the main menu but the design is a very responsive list style that is clean so arrow keys are not a problem. It is actually quicker and more responsive than most AAA games these days, even those that have mouse control. It never even occured to me that the mouse might not work because I only used the keyboard/controller; but I have heard that complaint.

As for a HOTAS, it won't work well for a flight game. If you're looking for a flight simulator try DCS. You wouldn't use a HOTAS for GTA or Need for Speed. I don't get the complaints. A $30 Xbox 360 controller works flawlessly. It does support some HOTAS, but not all currently. But again, it would be fairly stupid. I have an X52 Pro but won't bother using it because it isn't conductive to the flight model in the game. Again, it isn't a flight sim.

Graphics look pretty good. The only shortcoming is the trees and buildings can have a short draw distance. Hope they give an option for a longer view range in the future because I must be getting 70-80 frame rates all maxed out at 2560x1440. Otherwise the graphics look very good. I assume that is limitation for UE4 which only supports tiny map sizes / draw distance (for a flight game). Plane 3D models are not as detailed as DCS modules, but that is to be expected. Each plane costs $60-80 for DCS so I expect far more attention to detail there. Outside of that graphics look pretty amazing.

If you're okay with games like GTAV, FFXV (a steaming pile of shit), Assassins Creed Origins, Nier Automata (average game, shit port) or MGSV then Ace Combat 7 won't be a problem. Of all those games, so far it is by far the best PC port and the least buggy. Add in ultra wide support and it would be practically perfect.

Edit: Added some screen shots to show off the graphics along with DCS. Note I am using my own Ace Combat themed skins for DCS but they should be easy to tell apart. DCS looks better in some areas, AC7 better in others. Coast lines and water looks better in AC7, as does some of the lighting. But DCS wins on aircraft 3D models and texture detail hands down.

AC7:

Obviously DCS has much bigger maps but that can also hurt low level detail. You can see how pointy the hills can get below compared to AC7:

AC7 graphics are about as good as it gets for the genre, minus the not so great draw distance on some objects. At least the frame rate consistently runs very high. A higher draw distance option would be wonderful though I wonder if it will be too much for UE4.

I don't have a gamepad, and don't want one. I've got a flight stick and should be able to use it. I had flight sticks for the PS1 and 2 as well. Doesn't matter that the game is an arcade and not a sim.

Conversely, how'd you feel if the game didn't support game pads and all you heard was go buy a flight stick.

It does support HOTAS; it doesn't support every single one at the moment. What other models will be added I'm not sure, I'm going to assume not many though. I can't be too sure because it sounds like the developers issued a response but it is bad English and may be interpreted wrong so we'll have to wait and see. But again, it isn't the right tool for the job anyways. Should they support racing wheels to?

Just another case of taking a minor issue and blowing it well out of proportion.

I was gonna try to play it with a controller. I'm used to that, having played previous Ace Combat games on PS1 and PS2.
Works flawlessly on my 360 controller. One of the best running, least buggy games I've played in many years. But I've only put 3 hours into it. Will comment on it more when I finish the campaign. But so far I've been so impressed with the stability and smoothest of the actions that it has partially restored my faith in gaming after the last 2-3 years of utter trash - Nintendo, Ubisoft, Square Enix, I'm looking at you.

You probably don't realize how ironic this statement, and trying to flip the situation to apply to game pads, really is.

The fact is the game does support HOTAS, but not every one out there, and support for more is being added. But when you try to flip the situation to gamepads, that is exactly the situation that exists with gamepads, but worse. Now a days, a lot of game get Xbox controller support and that's it. Don't have a Xbox controller? Tough shit. And they don't just release the game with Xbox controller support, then work to add more gamepads later. Nope. You get Xbox controller support and Xbox controller support only.

You wouldn't use a HOTAS for GTA or Need for Speed.
It's like idiots trying to play GTA:V with a steering wheel...

Well, for me... story in Air Combat was basically non-existent. You're hired to fight against some terrorists or something. Ace Combat 2 was a little bit more developed, but it felt a lot more like Air Combat than it did Ace Combat 4 or 5. Zero, in a way, kind of falls off here, in my opinion. Sure, there are different paths to take depending on what you do, but all in all the end result is the same. There was definitely more story to it than 1 or 2, but it wasn't quite as good as 4 or 5. Of course, I didn't pick up the game because I heard it had this amazing storyline, but it was a nice bonus I wasn't expecting. Maybe I'm easily pleased?

Can't comment on 3 or 6, haven't played.

Have hardly touch AC7's story so I won't comment. But I did enjoy AC04's story. Certainly was a unique back in 2001. AC5 became too personal and therefore generic and cheesy, like most other video game stories.
