“We have said [to Microsoft] think it over,” he told the Financial Times. “Think twice. It will create a huge negative impact for the ecosystem and other brands may take a negative reaction. It is not something you are good at so please think twice.”

Google bought Motorola's smartphone division and I haven't seen any negative impact on the smartphone ecosystem. Hell, the HTC One X and the Samsung Galaxy S3 are the top 2 most desired Android smartphones right now.

Acer's concern is the "walled garden." They see Microsoft releasing hardware as a step in that direction. Google has avoided the "walled garden" hence little impact.

Jokes aside, all these comments come from people who feel their business is threatened by what MS plans to do. It is indeed risky but frankly Microsoft has no alternative but try to push into mobile. It seems that this is the future. If they succeed and cut a fair slice from Apple's market then of course these other producers of tablets will suffer. But wait, there's the Android!

I doubt Microsoft rushed into this without considering its impact on other oem manufacturers.
Someone has to take a bite out of apple and I don't see acer stepping up to the plate, otherwise apple will continue to get contracts for all the best screen panels, batteries ect. leaving nothing but scraps for the other oems to assemble their products from.

In case of tablets, most likely Android/iOS. In case of PCs, not sure because people will wish for something "similar" which is hard to fulfill (unless they are willing to learn the Linux/BSD way or accept that they will move from the rain into the snow when going to OS X (which is in part working with the same restrictive principles as MS seems to be turning to).
