I changed my thermal paste yesterday and I did it on a i7-8750h. It was my second time changing it and I did the same things. Remove the HDD, remove the bottom, unplug the battery, and then the heat sink. Cleaned with the normal stuff the CPU. This is again, on a 2018 model AN 515-52-78( or something like that ) Nitro 5. I got some cooler master essential e2 ( don't remember the name correctly ). But after the laptop was back on my desk, with every load, 95 degrees Celsius off the start. But this was only on the CPU, the GPU was very cool. Do u know how I should fix that.

So I assume you repasted once before and everything was fine then, but you repasted yesterday and suddenly you're getting high CPU temps?

If that's the case, if you have spare paste left and a way to clean it, I'd remove the heatsink, reapply a dot of paste on both the GPU and CPU dies, then carefully reinstall that heatsink. Sounds like the mounting pressure is not right. Alternate between screws when installing it. nice pfp btw

Well, firstly, I did try again and with the same result. But again, I didn't put much thought in to the pressure. Do you think it should be just a pressure thing and not anything related to the CPU being damaged in some day? I didn't do anything harmful so I don't really think so.

I doubt the CPU is damaged from doing this at all, takes a lot to break/damage a CPU.

If the high temps started happening after you repasted, it's a contact/mounting pressure issue.

That's very reassuring, thanks a lot, man. So look, there is one think I think I didn't do correctly. There are numbers on the heat sing from 1 to 7 and when I got it out I did them from 1 to 7 in that order. But when I put it back, I didn't follow the reverse process, and I just did it random. Could that be it?

Possibly. Re-do it, and see if the temps improve. Don't over apply paste on the GPU and CPU dies btw, a little drop is enough. It's not desktop CPU-sized, it's just a die.

I'll try that when I get home. Appreciate it and nice profile pic.

well i think I found one of the problems @Alexa. The mount on two of them seems to be different from the other two. It looks more lower. Could that be it. If yes, how should I fix it?

So now, something strange is happening, two cores are doing ok with the temps, under 80 when full load, but the other 4 are all over 95. Why? I think the best thing I should do is to see if they can fix it at my local PC repair shop. Thanks a lot for the help btw

I've brought it to the service, hope they'll fix it.

Some cores just run hotter than others for no reason -- this is perfectly normal.

In your case i think the mounting pressure is uneven so one side or corner of the heatsink isnt making that great a contact with the CPU as all the other side is

Occasionally some manufacturers might use thermal pads instead of thermal grease and it is important to take note how thick the thermal pads are so you can replace them with better thermal pads or even a copper shim which are available on ebay. Ive solved many overheating laptop issues with copper shims from back in the day though that was quite a few years back

Maybe the cooler has become slightly warped or you used a thermal paste like MX-4 that now has a tendency to get really runny when hot so isnt good for laptops.

I did took note of some gummy pads on the GPU memory parts but I didn't see anything like you said. But again, I just want to make sure of one thing. The CPU can't be broken right? Anyway, do you think a pc repair shot could fix it? Or is it a problem where it's just better to replace the whole heatsink

Im not the one with your laptop in my hands so i cant give you any sort of assurances or solutions on fixing it apart from using good thermal paste and making sure the heatsink isnt warped or bent up in a way thats messing with the mounting pressure. Sometimes there are small things that poke out from the motherboard that might prevent the heatsink from being screwed all the way down but if you've checked all that then there is really nothing else to suggest.

Only thing you can do is wait for the shop to get back to you after theyve had time to have a look at it. Hopefully the shop is a good one and not run by a bunch of cowboys. Im guessing its not one of Acer's service centers because depending on the age of your laptop, opening it up and repasting might have voided any warranty that came with it

well thanks a lot for the info. well they are pretty dedicated and so far they helped me with any problem that I had. The laptop is form 2018 and I have it for two years, no more warranty. Either way, here in romania, at least in my case, it didn't went to the Acer's shop but to some other shop when I sent it back, and they didn't think it had a problem 6 months ago (over heating, that\s when I changed the thermal paste my my self and it was ok for the following time). Anyway, again, big thanks for everyone that helped, if I get a clear response from them, I'll make sure to post it back here so if there are people in my place in future, this might help.

If worst comes to worst and they cant fix it. Buy some copper shims off ebay. two 1mm and two 1.2mm shims (search for 'laptop copper shim') - one for your CPU and GPU and basically sandwich it in between the heatsink and the CPU/GPU with thermal paste on both sides and dont over tighten when screwing it down.

If the copper shims dont fix the problem, you'll know that its not the mounting pressure thats causing you issues and to look elsewhere.

@FreedomEclipse and @Alexa, the guy at the local service managed to fix it and it's very good right now. Freedom Eclipse you were right about the pressure from the heat sink, it was messed up. There where some conductor thing on the vram and other things besides the cpu and the gpu and that got moved in such a way that it let a lot of space between the sink and the processor. So the paste dried up and from there on, it was just crap. He did all the gummy looking like things again with some now ones and so it managed to clear that space. He also used some MX-4 and it's about 30 celsius when idle and 60-65 while 100% benchmark load. Thanks a lot for you help, you too. See you on the forum. Have a great day.
