I thought I'd drop my 2 cents since researching a monitor can be really hard and it might help some people some time.
I own those monitors long enough to draw some conclusions. My s2716dg is from early 2016, it's the first revision. My xb241yu is from late 2017 and it's the bmiprz version. So let's go one by one, form most to least important in my opinion.
Colors on both monitors:
When it comes to color banding, s2716dg is clearly inferior. It has no factory calibration while acer has several gamma presets to choose from, and none of them produce any significant color banding. It's marginal on the acer but very pronounced on s2716dg. Acer has built in saturation control, so you don't have to do anything through nvcp. The acer also has more color regulation options (not only rgb, but also yellow, magenta and cyan levels).
Acer clearly wins here unless you have a color calibration device.
Gaming:
Acer is a 165hz monitor, while dell is 144hz. Both support ULMB, but Dell in ULMB mode is just too dark even at 100%. Acer has no problems running a bright image in ulmb. In g-sync mode, both have excellent pixel response time and the image in motion is razor sharp, but dell very clearly has more color artifacts in extreme mode, while on acer it's well within the limits of acceptable and goes unnoticed most of the time. You have to put the s2716dg is the normal response mode, which gets rid of most overshoot but you can see more blur and slower pixel response.
Xb241yu has the osd setting for displaying refresh rate number and different aimpoints, while s2716dg has none of those features.
Overall, in fast motion, acer feels faster and more accurate with colors while also having the features I mentioned above, which I use all the time.
Another win for acer
Image sharpness and size:
Dell is bigger, so it makes it better for browsing the internet. I wish I could say that about videos too, but color banding really lets you down here, therefore I prefer xb241yu for movies and videos. In gaming, the image produced by xb241yu is sharper and there's less visible aliasing due to higher dpi. Dell is quite sharp too, but in some games you can clearly see some aliasing.
Build quality:
The build quality is fine one the dell and has good height regulation. But the acer feel more premium here too. It feels much more sturdy and well built, it has height regulation and full pivot. When I try to shake my desk the dell get wobbly too, but the acer does not thanks to excellent build quality and firm feet. On the xb241yu you'll also find a big spike protruding out of the back, which looks badass and is great for hanging your headphones.
All in all, I feel like s2716dg could have been sooo much better if they had spent more work on the osd, which is ver, very basic. Acer wins the osd options comparison by a landslide, and that's mostly what makes the xb241yu a much better display overall. It's an impressive little monitor for gaming, I can't even find one weakness for the acer. When I had s2716dg only, it felt great, but after 7 months of running them side by side, I clearly see s2716dg has a lot of shortcomings in comparison to xb241yu. I felt like the difference is big enough to write those few words for you.
