The ADATA Legend 960 is the first Silicon Motion SM2264-based M.2 NVMe SSD that we're testing. In their package, ADATA includes a heatsink, which can easily be installed to reduce the drive's temperatures. Synthetic performance results are also very good, matching competing high-end drives.

This is nice and all, but where are the Gen 5 SSDs? Wasn't the projection for them to be released this month? There's only about a week left.

  • Thermal throttling, even with included heatsink
The 960 in the name refers to the degrees, right?

Maybe we will see paper launches to fullfill the "deadline".

Dayum. 93° C on the heat spreader. The controller chip underneath must be at 100° C. This really needs some decent cooling.

And considering that it throttles even with heatsink means the chip reaches 100° C with the heat sink attached.

This is pretty bad.

LN2/full submersion cooling here we come

Obviously, somebody did something wrong here, if the temps are accurate....seeins how most other SSD mfgr's seem to be able to make drives that stay way cooler than this one, even without a heatsink... add to that the ngreedia-inspired price points, and this seems to be an auto-no buy for alot of folks....including me !

so......W.T.F. ???????

Very disappointing but demonstrates exactly why Silicon Motion is no longer an SSD controller vendor of choice.

Do you understand what a projection is? Or that the market is in the middle of a very sharp contraction due to the recession?

This is the drive without heatsink. Let me clarify in the text. .. Looking at the metal case of the IC. It's covered with a proper foil that ensures the shiny surface does not affect the measurement (most common error during FLIR measurements)

We knew about the impending market conditions months ago, before said projections were made. Yes things change, but we didn't get any updates about changes to the market availability of Gen 5 SSDs, hence the question.

I shouldn't have asked that question here anyways, not like anyone knows anything.
