With the growing prevalence of crypto currencies and the mining of them, having the right hardware has never been more important. In recent months, the Chia crypto currency has seen a surge in popularity. Unlike other crypto currencies, Chia is based on a proof of space time model rather than proof of work model used by other currencies. In terms of hardware, this mean Chia places more importance on storage rather than performance.

Given its leading position and expertise in high-capacity storage products, ADATA SSDs have been the go-to hardware for many Chia miners the world over. In April of 2021, ADATA saw a five-fold month-over-month increase in its SSD and DRAM orders. What's more, in multiple articles written about the recent Chia trend, many media outlets have cited ADATA SSDs as ideal solutions for Chia mining. The popularity of Chia and its resulting demand for high-capacity SSDs looks to continue.

"While the sudden increase in SSD demand is quite unexpected, we are not at all surprised that Chia miners are turning to our high-capacity storage products for their unique needs," said Shalley Chen, President of ADATA. "At ADATA, we have always been focused on developing and offering high-quality, high-performance, and high-capacity devices to meet the needs of discerning users, whether they be PC enthusiasts, gamers, creators, or crypto miners."

For Chia miners, high-capacity and reliable storage devices are critically important. ADATA storage devices possess both of these attributes. Among them are its lineup of PCIe SSDs including the XPG SX8200 Pro Gen3 x4, SX8100 Gen3 x4, and GAMMIX S50 Lite Gen4 x4 SSDs. All three come with high capacities of up to 2 TB and can be paired with an ADATA DDR4 3200 MHz or XPG GAMMIX D45 3600 32 GB DRAM module for maximum effectiveness. All of the aforementioned devices have been tested for Chia mining by ADATA engineers on the latest Intel Z590 and AMD X570 platforms to guarantee seamless performance.

In addition to the aforementioned SSDs, ADATA will soon be launching its new LEGEND PCIe Gen4 SSDs, giving Chia miners even more options.

"Hey everyone I've got a great idea! I'm going to create a new currency based on printing then storing your own imaginary lottery tickets inside the small amount of flash storage inside your TV. You just open up your TV, hammer them constantly with writes to stand a 10% chance of winning free imaginary money. This will probably kill your TV in 4 weeks, however you can just demand a replacement TV for free. Oh, and in 4 weeks time that 10% chance will become 1% because you'll be competing with more people, so you will need to buy and destroy 10x TV's over the next 4 weeks to re-increase your chance from 1% to 10%. Then in 8 weeks your 10% chance will become 1% again due to competing with even more people, so after the 8th week you will to buy and destroy 100x TV's then demand replacement for 100x TV's. Then after the 12th week after you've ordered, destroyed and demanded a replacement for 1,000 mining TV's, all during a global component shortage, the world will be a better place!"

The sheer clinical retardation of Chia pyramid scheme "economics" in a nutshell... (At least Dutch Tulip bulbs smell nice when planted...)

I am not too sure if this is something that they should brag about. I am sure they will also see a spike in RMA rate. Miners don't have to wait till the NAND is worn out to initiate an RMA so as to go around the issue where warranty will be void if the NAND is worn out.

True though if Chia miners start RMA-ing 99% used SSD's that were manufactured mere weeks ago, expecting 59x replacement SSD's (one per month for 5 year guarantee drives) after paying for just 1x, I'll give it all of 5 minutes before manufacturers change their RMA T&C's to start using "% lifespan / wear levelling count used over time" instead of just "absolute life used" (ie, instead of "600TBW total or 5 years", it'll be "10TBW per month or 5 years" or "% lifespan used per hours powered on"), something easily achieved given SMART usually records everything from TBW, power-on-hours, power-on-count, etc.

Great, after chips shortages, we immediately faced NAND shortages.

From Matt Levine (a popular contributor to Bloomberg):

I have a coin that uses <1% of Bitcoin’s energy per transaction! It is called ExcelCoin. Instead of relying on proof-of-work, burning tons of energy to mine coins to reward people for keeping track of the ledger of transactions, as Bitcoin does, ExcelCoin relies on me keeping track of the list of transactions in Microsoft Excel. If you want to buy ExcelCoins, you just wire me money and I add some ExcelCoins to the line with your name on it, in my Excel spreadsheet...

[snip]

If you want to redeem your ExcelCoins for dollars, well, well, well, well, well, well, let’s discuss that some other time.

Why on earth is this taking off and not FileCoin back literally years ago?

At least filecoin offered something (distributed, decentralized cloud storage).

Chia is all the bad of crypto without the energy cost. They solved like, one thing and ignored the rest. Why is it popular?

Something seems amiss here.

ADATA is keenly aware of the capabilities of their products (TBW / DWPD). Since this is consumer level we’re likely talking about TLC / QLC. The writing is on the wall as to how long these products will last regardless of wear leveling Implementations. Why would ADATA even imply that they welcome this type of use when the product isn’t fit for purpos? This is either going to result in a massive in flux of RMA’s to them directly or to retailers if not both.

The only way this doesn’t happen is if Chia farms only use ADATA SSD’s for OS boot drives and use real enterprise level SSD’s for Chia farming. This likely won’t happen because Chia farmers either don’t know going in or don’t care.

If ADATA and venders are smart they will reject these RMA’s (ie no replacements and no refunds).
