ADATA's SX8000 SSD uses a high-performance PCIe x4 3.0 interface in the M.2 2280 form factor. During testing, the drive delivered excellent performance results, which, combined with the excellent price of $220, make this an excellent choice if you want to join the NVMe crowd.

Yeah that is hot, other than that quite reasonable ssd(perf+price+mlc how not to like it). Do you have any of those new intel 760p's on the review queue?

Slight typo on Test setup page, test system table lists kabylake i7 7770K processor.

So, there is a performance difference when using a fan, but only for writes. Interestingly enough, in the real world scenarios, we see that difference in AV and Photoshop startup tests. Tests that should be mostly about reads.

margin of error i would think

I wasn't implying any foul play or anything, I know TPU is better than that.
Just highlighting how relevant synthetics are in real life.

I am baffled by the lack of sufficient cooling for these NVMe SSDs. Its like they have deleted the use of fin'ed aluminium because it looks shitty and even when used it is solids with logical worse dispertion of heat. It should not be something we are battling in 2018 :0

I think the rationale is you practically never move that much data around as a home user, so the throttling is something that only shows up in reviews.

Agreed, but most uses buying NVMe SSDs right now is in the upper end of "home users" And even to home users these temps will effect lifetime of products (thats not a bad thing to the companies), but its sad when hardware dies due to a through life when it comes to heat. Can remember my "n680"? chipset could be used to heat a small town up. Almost everyone that had that chipset had problems due to insurficient cooling. It just seems as such a stupid limiter to the speed of a NVMe speed ssd to throttle to 220 mb/s. Its like saying: "hey heres a super fast ssd but its only super fast if you dont really are going to utilize it fully! :)

CPUs routinely come enduring >80C. I think these drives will be fine. If you're an enthusiast, the airflow alone will take care of the temps in your case anyway ;)

That said, I wouldn't mind seeing a cheap heat dissipating thing in there, but think it's a little more complicated than that. As we have agreed, temps are not a problem for most users. But an added heatsink may prevent installing these in a range of devices. Imho, manufacturers aren't trying to screw users, they're just playing it safe.

Well this review shows otherwise? 220 mb/s when throttling is like a bad SATA150 drive :S. To me buying a product that is like buying a faulty product (if im going to use it as a content-creator), moving stuff around alot; This would be a dealbreaker when choosing a drive. (I know many other drives have the 100% same issue), but to me that is not acceptable. You pay 300-400 dollars for a SSD that cannot okay. As you mention a cheap cooler would suffice on the ssd. Just so you know; super high temperature might not instakill your hardware but in the long run they will statistically reduce their lifeexpectancy.

Yes, but it's only throttling when you write 1GB/s for over 200 seconds. I don't know how often you write that much, but I'm pretty sure in my case the answer is never.

I agree: but then again; people who buy super expensive NVMe SSD can be expected to have such use. Otherwise the argument could simply be; well you dont need more than 200 mb/s read write so a old SATA150 SSD is enough. (Again in my eyes; a throttling SSD does not make sense to me as a consumer) If I had the seller hat on I would love it; quicker replacing ssds due to failure or the need for added cooling. lets make money bois!

Now you're just splitting hairs. Plus, this drive is anything but expensive.

Well if you pay the extra for better performance than a SATA SSD, yes I would be splitting hair! :D When did performance become something irrelevant? :D People go full metal over the overheating of CPUs or GPUs but SSD; doesnt matter? :D And when did techpowerup stop caring about the performance of stuff!? :D Having a SSD throttling is like paying for a 7900X for rendering and getting a i5 7400 performance! I think we will keep disagreeing if we can agree on that the hardwares limits should not be defined by the lack of cooling, especially when it comes to ssds! :0

Jesus Christ the performance of this drives is fine save for one unrealistic scenario where you simply write tons of sequential data. And still you make a big deal out of it...

dude; I litterally just talked to a dude that had a usecase of copying that would render this SSD worse than a nonthrottling competitor. To me numbers matters; not religion. 98% should not buy a nvme ssd but the 2% that should, could also be within the limit of throttling. Its like saying that OC RAM should not be able to perform as they are specced because theres no need for anything more than 3200mhz or saying that it is okay that AMDs ref gfx thermal throttles at intense gaming but thats okay since people shouldnt be able to see the fps anyway! Im out of this discussion leave your reply and ill either be wiser or nor not! :D
