Adding extra wifi (modem/router) to my already extended network.

I have an internet connection that I have extended to my Brother in law's house, next door. At the moment, I basically have two LAN cables coming out of my modem/router, one going to my computer and another, extended cable, going to his computer.
However, he wants to use his spare modem/router, which has wifi capability, to allow his son to use his own computer downstair with only wifi.
Therefore, will there be any conflicts if I simply splice in a Lan cable or add a lan socket for the second modem/router (wifi location.) at the appropriate point along Lan cable 2? See diagram below.
If there is a possibility of conflict what would be an alternate wiring method?

You can change at the end Computer1 with Router 2 and run a cable from Router 2 to Computer 1 instead. Otherwise i think you need a separate LAN cable for the router to work.

just run your second lan line to either of those, connect lan line 1 to brothers computer, set up network and add in his son's computer on wireless side. make sure to password protect/log on for wireless or else everyone in your area will jump on your internet

as zsolt said, just plug the cable that is already going to his computer into the router, and then plug a cheap 3'-6' cable from that router into his computer, and enable wireless. no splicing necessary.

even though you can cut and rewire an ethernet cable - it's not a faucet. just hooking a second end to one cable does not send internet down both pieces,it breaks them both instead.

What about DHCP conflicts in this scenario ?

well he would actually be better off imo unless he is sharing files from his computer to his brother in law's. dhcp would assign his b-i-l's router an address just like it does his computer right now. after that his b-i-l's router would route and give different addresses to each computer. that would segment the network and make his router work less, which is good.

as far as conflicts I can't see any reason there would be one. in the scenario he described he wouldn't even get that far, that would be problems before the networking layer.

No file sharing, simply independent internet use.

perfect. it should be very simple to setup too, reset his router to defaults and plug the cable from your router, still plugged in where it is on your end, into the WAN port on his router, and you should be all set.

but just because i'm a stickler: technically what you have as lan 1 and lan 2, are both lan 1. lan 2 extension and the wireless part are both just lan 2. a router segments a lan (normally) so lan 1 starts after router one, lan 2 after router 2, etc.

Thanks for the advice, everyone.
I went around to his last night and, low and behold, he has the modem plugged-in already in exactly the conriguration of the updated plan. So, at least I know the setup works fine.
All I'll need to do now is move the modem downstairs, so that the wifi is sufficient, chop into Lan 2 cable, add a couple of Lan sockets to the wall and plug the whole lot back together with a couple of Lan fly leads.

How did you do your DHCP?

I havn't the foggiest, he sorted all the number stuff out.

What I did find interesting is that when we swapped providers a few weeks ago I found that when I turned on my modem and computer, my computer would be really slow and unresponsive. Just clicking on Start to get to my D: drive was a nightmare. However, I discovered, by trial and error, that if I unplugged the Lan cable to his place before turning on my modem/computer then my computer would work normally. I would then just plug his Lan back in after a couple of minutes.
However, I explained this to him and he did some of that number jiggerypockery, which I don't really get, and now everything works as it used to without me having to unplugged his Lan cable.

How did you do your DHCP?

if his b-i-l already has it set up he didn't have to do anything,. his router gives an address via dhcp to his computer and his bil's router, and his bil's router in turn gives an address via dhcp to his bil's and bil's son's computers. a very basic configuration that with routers on default settings (assuming they don't both use the same network eg the 0 in (192.168.0.1), then it should just work.
