i dont think it matters much if everything is wired & you're not looking for 200+ torrent connections?

personally i dont like the idea of router+modem in the same box, but now i'm wondering how much ping 2 separate devices adds

It's best to have separate devices. More control and better management. Most combo devices have problems with stuff like streaming boxes, games, range extenders, etc.

I have a separate modem and router.

I bought a scientific Atlanta modem and I got an Amped Wireless R20000G high power router. I have not had any problems with both. Very nice. I have not had a single problem with games with my networking setup.
