Adventures of the SR-2

Unlike my other adventures, I plan on sticking this one out to either I'm defeated or this build is.

A very kind soul has passed me his EVGA SR-2, two x5680s, and 12 gigaboops. It was loved, water-cooled, and now being a real pain in my rear.

I don't have proper coolers so I'm using a couple heatsinks and fans to use as troubleshooting since as soon as this sucker gets turned on it's an instant FF code. (Fully functioning my @$$ EVGA)

I tried removing CPU 2, ram, turned off all PCI slots, tried one stick, two stick, blue sticks, swapped CPU power cables (psu works, was just using it) and currently letting it sit with the cmos battery out.

If anyone can chime in on this thing that would be great. If it turns up to be SOL it's gonna be wall mounted and proudly shown to any poor soul who walks into my home.


UPDATE: The CPU jumpers were missing. Now we're power cycling before we can get into the bios with the codes

Final update for tonight: It works!

My mistake was losing the manual and not checking the ram slots. Turned out red before black and now it's posting with a Windows install going. The entire time it didn't want to do anything was a couple missing jumpers. Now to get coolers!

Currently running the beast at 3.5ghz with the unofficial cooling and many, many fans. Benching on CPUz shows that it'll take on a 1800x for multi-thread and as for single-thread, well... yeah we'll stick to multi.

I've been loading up off and on WCG jobs to let it "flex" here and there and boy does it flex. While my 2680v2 dualie has more threads it just doesn't push the same kind of fun in single as this thing does.

Checklist of things I need:

CPU coolers (No shop has any of the normal stock cooling, nor two of the same cooler that'll fit)

Case, just something to fit this thing.

I'll keep updating as thing pop up.

Local shop has a damaged Cosmos 1000 that they were gonna yeet out. Only has damaged front USB connectors but for $50 I can't complain. Gonna grab it tomorrow!

Called out from work due to allergies were just wrecking my life earlier today. Felt a bit better and boxes came in so y'know what? I saw in reviews these were easy to install so it's a cooler day than yesterday.

Push/pull on both, CPU0 had issues detecting all the ram banks but a little wiggle on the cooler fixed that. No it doesn't look like there's a bent pin but who knows, I don't feel the greatest so I'm rolling with it.

20c drop from the ghetto AMD cooling from earlier, CPUz bench hits 65c max so let's get clocking!

Running cinebench20 at 3.75ghz I'll inch out to top a 1700x. 1.305v vcore with the hottest core hitting 88c. I'm thinking it'll be better to run at 3.5ghz/1.25v

Wishlisted the 120mm so I can nab those and the 90mm. Gotta have airflow in the case before the install.

I love my SR-2.

You're gonna test the limits on that 650w PSU too. I pull almost 700 under full load, and that's with a small workstation vid card.

What all did you need to do for it? I'm swapping PSUs with my 2x 2680v2 so the SR-2 gets the 1kw.

Can't remember. I think it's a tight fit and you have to add standoff's because it wasn't drilled for HPTX. That and you lose a couple of expansion slots.
I'm actually using a Cubitek case.

Since I'm lazy and want things to go as easy as possible, I'm moving my x470 stuff into the Cosmos 1000 and having the SR-2 in my Nanoxia case which supports HTPX natively. Yay.

2/3 boxes showed up so far.

It's by far my favorite case. So much to do in there and airflow is fantastic. I just hate how heavy it is but that's one downside against many positives. I'd love to have another but my girlfriend might not let me wake up if I got a second one.

Case time.

I spent most of the day moving and upgrading today my desktops today. Swapped PSUs, coolers, cases, installed parts, checked parts, all that good stuff. End result for our favorite board is a new home in a dusty tower.

She fits! I need to figure out airflow at some point and a proper PSU since this one I have to use a 4 to 8 pin power (the overclock is small so I'm not concerned) connector. Yes it's dusty but the camera makes it out to be much worse than it actually is. Later on I'll give it a good clean but man, today was a long day.

Update: waiting on the coolers and fans to get here, ETA Saturday, to finish the minus drives. Cable extensions are in. Power supply is in (and it's a proper PSU!) Usb 3.0 card is in.

The two gray Noctua fans are getting put in the very front for intake since they pull so much and one AIO will be going there. The other AIO will be at the top and a fan in the empty slot.

Next will be drive bays. I'll probably remove the front bays in favor of airflow and put back in the bottom one. SSDs need some cool flows right? Right.

Update hopefully soon.

Oh and fixed the missing ram issue. Needed mo' powah. (Voltage)

I want to try a couple of those new Intel TEC coolers on my SR-2.
Very high on my wish list now. Me like to experiment.

And here we stay until Sunday or Monday, ish.

The 24 pin is in the worst possible location. I can either go down a fan for the bottom cooler, wait for a 90 degree adapter, or drill more holes. I'm going with the adapter that is already ordered. There just is no space to have the radiator and fan with how far the power connector sticks out.

She do be purdy tho.

Connector came in, didn't solve anything thanks to Nanoxia's not so fantastic drive cage cooling whatever layout. Whatever, case now unofficially supports 480mm on top.

Little cable hanging out is for easy off/on switching. Temps dropped 30c with the new coolers and now we're running at 4.3ghz.

Still a work in progress. Having ram issues once again and trying to get 4.4 for the overclock.

Alright, so she's stable at 4,252mhz (4.25ghz-ish) and running oh so nicely. Wrapping this thread up I want to thank the guys that made this happen, however I won't be calling out names in case they don't want to be put in the spotlight.

Benchmarks? Cinebench, blender, etc, some games of your using it for that or video render.

Just curious how it compares to other cpus, either way that's pretty awesome
