Advice For People wishing to update to Windows 10 Redstone

DO NOT do a direct update. I just did mine and all my settings as well as programs have been seriously messed up. Small things like Cortana has been activated again, or default browser set to Edge. Big thing like my CLC Genomeworkbench License got messed up, which costs ~5000 dollars.

So do yourself a favor and perform a clean install from the Redstone ISO. Congrats to M$ for messing up update process as always.

The update to Anniversary went well for me . Chrome and File Explorer run faster . No issue so far

Entries in the left panel of the Start menu can be uninstalled by right-click-> uninstall !

Edit : after the update , i used Windows disk tools to cleanup C: . Maybe this is the reason why Chrome and File Explorer run faster . Not sure . But even now , i think , they are still a little faster at least .

Before each such huge update, make sure you're using the latest drivers and software that is compatible with the update you're about to install. This usually especially applies to system wide applications like antiviruses, SSD caching software (had problems with Sandisk ExpresssCache on transition from Win8.1 to Win10) and other things that are deeply connected to the system. If they aren't 100% compatible, uninstall them prior upgrading. Use vendor webpages to verify.

That's it basically. The rest can be reinstalled or changed anyway later, you just don't want your system to fall into a deadlock state because of compatibility issues. Most serious companies/vendors prepared for this some time ago. But there might still be some that haven't. I know Comodo products for example experienced some driver installation issues for example...

It all depends FROM WHERE you update, mister. All my computers (all Win10 already) updated perfectly to this latest version. Not a single program was messed up....

Certain software (5000 coin or not) still is not 100% Windows 10 ready. Licence activation can break. Usually you reinistall, or call or write them for a fix. I had to with Abbyy Finereader after some Insider build updates.

Well I've updated to the anniversary edition and no problems before or after install.
Just checked for updates and let it do it's thing.

The update blue screened my PC on restart, then spent the next 30 minutes removing it and repairing/restoring. First time I've ever had an update go so wrong.

Only M$'s one drive effed up on my update though all the shit did switch back on,, but they did advertise those Improvements.

Update successful on 5/5, this includes a mix of PC's and laptops, between a year old and 7 years old.

My work laptop has still not received the update yet. I must say this has been a painless operation that has taken some time, depending on the system. So far I like the improvements, though annoying to re-disable One Drive, it took 2 seconds so is what it is.

It's a full on Update of course it's gonna reset settings. I had to redo my Soundcard. GFX, other assorted "resetable things" like One Drive as theoneandonly mentioned. I don't get how this is a shock to anyone. I expect a whole slew of new drivers for hardware very shortly to work with the update...

No problems whatsoever on the machines I've done it on (sys specs+sig), took like 10 minutes or so. No settings changed or anything.

Mine was updated this Tuesday and the only issue I experienced was CS:GO will stay at 30 fps until I alt+tab out and then alt+tab back in. The frame rate then goes up to the maximum.

None of my other games were affected though. Battlefield 4 multiplayer starts out and stays 100+ fps.

It changed a few small things for me, like the custom resolution i was using, the taskbar appearance etc.
Also all the things i had turned off so microsoft could not spy me (at least in theory), but nothing O&O ShutUp10 could not revert.

Yep I had to run Shut up again too, Something I had "cured" had come back tho. I was having issues with my Icons "resetting" every GFX driver update(I have my apps on the left and my games on the right on my screen)It would reset them with absolutely no rhyme or reason either(as in it would move Default Icons somewhere else too) Well I don't know what voodoo I ended up doing that sorted it out but now after this update its "back" but now different.

Anytime I VSR(I'm on an old game kick) after I exit my Icons are basically in a 640x480 area. They still stay on their respected "sides" unlike before where is just randomly put them all back on the left but yeah it's annoying and none of my tricks are working either. Kinda minor in the big picture but it took me ages to fix it last time and now I am back to square one again. For the record I run 125% DPI because I'm old and at 1440. I know that has "something" to do with it but I managed to fix it before....

Fences 3.0 by Stardock. It has a trial period of 30 days, and costs I think $5 $10 after that. I bet you'll find you don't know how you lived without it.

LOL SOLD!!!! It is seriously the only real beef I've had with Win10. I mean I used to have like 60 icons on my desktop(All my games organized by platform) but with AMD pumping out driver updates with such frequency it was getting tiresome redoing them all the time i just deleted them all. Now it's "avoidable" but I can't use VSR. Oh and I did do an uninstall/reinstall of my drivers just to rule that out(the Icons stayed put...)

Thanks for that. I was gonna make an image of the installation first, but kinda reluctantly and now I will definitely do so.

While I respect your choice it's really just a small leap from 8.1 not sure what your afraid of. You just built a killer rig don't you wanna play say BF1 in all it's DX12 glory? I'll admit I waited quite awhile before I pulled the trigger I was quite happy on 7, 8 had no appeal but 10 just checked enough boxes and well of course, free, new and shiny, free you get the drift. I actually put it on may ancient Turion X2 laptop first as that was my "weakest link" Lets just say I rolled back to 7 pretty quick. But after my latest upgrade and getting my 7 in order I didn't see any downside of upgrading. Now both my computers are on it and both for the most part are happy and yeah it's got it's issues but so does every other OS.

I don't like the idea that updates to the OS are messing with my settings every time and that something may not run anymore as it used to run.
Also I hate these forced driver updates, I want full control over such myself, these things are holding me back.
I don't want to have to reinstall windows every few months.

I tried to install 10 several times on my 2010 Asus laptop but my laptop wasn't happy with it for some reason,
it would freeze up during installation or it froze up once logged in, the time the installation succeeded.
I went back to windows 7 on that laptop.
