Hi everyone, i just recently bought a logitech mx518 mouse to replace my wireless rubbish one that broke, and i wanted a keyboard to go with it, but i don't want a fancy one with all the extra buttons, i was considering a saitek eclipse II, but i also heard a few complaints that a break after a few months.

Would i just be better off buying a cheap £6-7 one, rather than spending £35 on the saitek eclipse II? any advice on a good performing standard keyboard would be great, thanks!

My last keyboard was a Saitek Eclipse 1, it lasted me for 14 months of abusive treatment before it needed replacing. My friend has had his Eclipse 1 for over 2 years of far better treatment and it's still going strong.

I replaced it with a Saitek Eclipse 2, using it atm and it's good. I'm sure the Eclipse 1 was better in terms of looks and comfort - the 2 has a square palm rest which is a bit awkward compared to the well rounded one found on the 1. The Eclipse 2 actually comes with all 3 colours of backlight whereas the Eclipse 1 only comes with one colour - not that this bothers me in the least.

The backlight on both are simply amazing by the way, really really easy to see in both good light and bad light - perfect for those late-night dark-room sessions of Doom3! The keys are also lazer etched so no amount of abuse can wear the letters off of the keys which is always a bonus, I find that on all my other keyboard the common keys - WASD, C and V tended to wear off fairly rapidly.

Oh, they're quiet too!

Nice, that does sound like a good choice, so which one would you suggest? the saitek 1 & 2 are pretty much the same price, not much diffrence, so would you suggest i get the saitek eclipse II?

While Vista might not be a great success, Microsoft makes great keyboards in my opinion. I use Microsoft keyboards and mice with almost all my systems. Great for gaming, browsing the net and what not. Their keyboards are very durable, most of them are spill proof if not all of them, they come with a lifetime replacement warranty, very ergonomic, have quiet key-press implementation, and are pretty affordable.

No fancy glowy, illumination and/or shiny crap though. So...

hey guys, thanks for the replys, it's just that i have read loads of reviews on the saitek eclipse 1 & 2 and quite a few people claim the keys start acting up and require you push them hard to register, can anyone who's had the keyboard for over a year deny this? as its the only reason putting me off buying one!

All I can say is that both of mine are totally fantastic.

I'd pick another Eclipse 1 having sampled both. The Red roxxors :p

Anyway, if you happen have one that starts messing you up (very unlikely) just claim on that warranty ;)

I had a Saitek Eclipse 1 and I loved it for about a year and a half. No such problems with keys. In fact, no problems at all.

I've got a new Logitech G15 now and I have to say that I absolutely love it. Typing and gaming are more comfortable on it than my Eclipse. And if you think you'll never use the LCD, think again. I've got a program that shows CPU, Memory, and net usage, Teamspeak info, voltages, temps, rpms, and a clock and date. The other thing I really like about the G15 is the design of the bottom of it. It really has a semi-integrated wrist wrest, although it comes with one. I use it without it, but could not for the life of my type an essay on my Eclipse without the wrist rest. Also, the LED backlighting is Orange rather than blue (orange doesn't interfere with your nightvision, but doesn't really matter since you're looking at a bright screen), and the backlighting doesn't bleed through inbetween the keys, giving it a really pretty look. I picked one up on special at Circuit City for $100 with $50 in rebates :) (no idea how much that is in £).I'll post some pics in a few.

If you go Saitek, get the Eclipse 1. The 2 looks like crap IMO and it looks cheaper.

The top one has been totally abused for 14 months. I'm a computer science student at university - when I say abused I mean like 6-10 hours a day.

Check how well the keys have lasted!

I had a Saitek Gaming Keyboard (basically the same as Eclipse, just with a command pad thingy crap). Still working after a year and a half.

My dad has a blue backlit Eclipse, 2 years, still going.

I have the red backlit Eclipse, 6 months, still going.

If it is for gaming, then the G15 rev. 1... Top notch keys that dont fade. Keys are soft, yet the spring back up quickly. Macros keys can come in handy, also the LCD screen is useful.

Howabout the Razer Tarantula?

The keyboard I'm using right now, some plastic crap..that has lasted for 5 years now
And it's still holding together. What I don't have is this "anti-ghosting" feature, which I would really like. As for backlit buttons, I have my own inventions so often that feature is something I do not need..

What do you think about the rev. 1 vs. the rev. 2?

People got mixed feelings over the two.

Personally, you are paying more money for rev2 for less stuff compared to rev1...
