After a cheapo 2nd hand notebook

As the title states after something in the £100ish region, used for browsing, watching stuff whilst on a plane and maybe some old games. Don't mind using ebay etc. Suggestions most appreciated.

You can get a decent 9"+ (ideal for browsing and movies) tablet for under £100 ideal for your req's apart from maybe the old games you referred to, though you can get Android dos emulators (depending on how old the games you are talking about are) something along the lines of a Huawei mediapad T3 or Samsung Galaxy Tab A, personally on the go, I'd find this better for usability than a notebook.

Would that be a better option than the 5th gen i5U options? I'm clueless with these U chips.
Edit to add, I've got a Tab A already, I'm after something with Windows though.

I have a laptop with an i5-5200U. It worked great for a while until it randomly started slowing down. Eventually it outright stopped working on battery power. I stopped using it when I got my W650KK1, which is the single best laptop I've ever used.

I'd recommend looking for older business laptops with at least a second gen quad core chip. Something like an HP Elitebook. Even older mac laptops (pre 2012) should work fine if you can find one in your budget.

Look for a Lenovo T430 or equiv. for that price. I often see em. Might pick one up myself for a beater travel laptop.

I have an X250 and used to have an X230 for work. Rock solid machines.

I'd recommend trying to spend a little more. I paid $210 for a used i3 8th gen intel laptop 15.6" touchscreen 8gb of ram and ssd came pre installed, and honestly i can see this little thing lasting a life time as far as indie games like stardew valley, or web browsing/netflix go. i mean we have reached a point in tech where those specs really will last you a life time (for the things you need anyway), where a 4gb ram system and older cpu might hitch up on you some, etc.

I understand your point, but, I really can't justify the extra £100. It'll be used to browse whilst I'm in bed and play Cannon Fodder era games. Surely a i5 4/5 gen is up to that?

My father got himself used T440s which uses the same type of clickpad. I wouldn't recommend it simply due to this. The T/X/x40 line had it, they've ditched it and came back to regular one with x50 line.

£100 is a very limited budget for anything useful (especially 4th/5th gen).
Besides older 3rd gen Thinkpads the only thing that comes to my mind is HP Probook 640 G1. Currently a base model w/ i5-4300M would go for around $150. What's good about it, is that unlike newer models it still has socketed CPU and could be potentially upgraded to i7-4702MQ. Plus, sellers usually don't check or discriminate LCD display types, so for the same money you could score a 1600x900 IPS in a compact 14" form factor.
Another thing that makes it better, is that usually those refurb. units are from the indoor environment, not field work (unlike most Thinkpad laptops).
Also, parts are cheap. Motherboards sell for $45-$50(for UMA model, more if you have dGPU), RAM/CPU/SSD/WiFi is replaceable, body parts are also abundant in Chinese stores, batteries cost less than my weekly coffee budget.
