Looking for CPU air cooler recommendation for new build. No plan to overclock, not a gamer.
Concerned about blocking first pci slot and/or RAM and excess weight with units like Noctua D15.
Like the size and weight of the Noctua NH-U12S but finding highly mixed opinions on whether or not it's adequate.
Build:
i9-9900k
Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro
32GB (2x16) GSkill Ripjaws V-series
970 Evo x2
GTX 1070
Lian Li B-25 case with Noctua 120mm fans x3
Appreciate any comments!

U12S or U12A?
Big difference in price!

Its to do with their fans. the U12A comes with two of their fans. the U12s comes with one. NF-A12 are quite premium.

If you already have some good fans then save money and go with the U12S

Don't need two fans one fan is fine on those coolers. Get the cheaper one.

There are better heatsinks for the price than the NHU12. I'd go for a Fuma 2 instead.

I contacted Noctua and they recommend the D15, but I don't if it will clear the M.2 slot or 1st pci slot on this board.

The NHD15S has more of the heatsink cut away for taller ram compatibility (and only has a single fan). if you want to use tall ram, the 15S might be better than the 15.

If you are cool with used and eBay items, often used heatsinks are half the price of new, I have two PHTC14PE that were each around $40 shipped off eBay. Other than the fan, they don't really go bad. If you buy the right one, they have low fan hours and look identical to new. The trick is closely looking at photos and feedback. Lots of high end air coolers from brands like Noctua pop up on there. Also might be helpful info: the 1151 socket is the same spacing as 1155 and 1150.

Just curious, if you’re not overclocking, why not just get the vanilla 9900? Might be cheaper even.

For stock if you're primarily gaming it'll be more than adequate unless you have a crazy high ambient.

You only need the D15 if you're trying to hit 5ghz but even it isn't adequate and you'll be hitting 100c in avx workloads unless you get a golden chip than can do 5ghz at 1.25v

Why k model if not OC'ing? The person I sell it to down the road (years I hope) may want to OC.

It's rather pointless to buy K version solely for that reason. Primary reason for buying a K CPU's should be overclocking and thus slightly better performance. Very few will believe you later when you'll try to sell K CPU describing it like "never overclocked, always kept under 65°C". :D

You only need the D15 if you're trying to hit 5ghz but even it isn't adequate and you'll be hitting 100c in avx workloads unless you get a golden chip than can do 5ghz at 1.25v
Not everyone will be benching their PC's with Prime 95 and similar all the time. Such tests can produce very unrealistic temps due to unrealistic CPU (over)load.

U12A is actually almost equivalent to the D15 due to the much improved 120mm fans. I would use the U12A. Built a 8700k system with the D15 and a 3900x system with the U12A. Both perform excellently, but independant testing shows the U12A to be within 5% performance, while being significantly quieter under max load.

Go for the U12A, next gen fans are something else I tell you.

If you're not overclocking, I would also seriously consider the 9900KS, since it's much better binned than a normal 9900k. What this means is although it's faster out of the box, it's also generally cooler since it's running at the same or lower voltages. Less of a "pre-overclocked" 9900k, but rather a second gen 9900k that still has headroom for OC, but the stock clocks and voltages are better across the board if that makes sense.

Noctua NH-U12S for stock

Noctua NH-D15S For @5ghz gaming or if you have poor ambient temperatures lets say around 30C ambient.

would be my 2 recommendations.

Not everyone will be benching their PC's with Prime 95 and similar all the time. Such tests can produce very unrealistic temps due to unrealistic CPU (over)load.

Some people use blender which uses AVX and even with a D15 he will hit 100c @5ghz

K SKUs have much better resell value and higher stock/turbo clocks, even for a non-overclocker they're a better choice.

Noctua is great since they support their old coolers, if a new socket with a new retention is released, you can get an install kit from them (even for free if you have the receipt).

I find it odd that folks worry about CPU cooler weight (< 2 pounds) and then have no issues at all applying 70 pounds of clamping force when tightening down the cooler. There is no concern here unless you shipping the assembled build via FedEx Ground Gorillas. My son took his PC backa and forth to college 4 times a year with the PC in the roof rack of his "off road" jeep.

The Scythe Fuma beats(1C better temps OC'd AIDA 64 1 dba quieter) or ties the Noc DH15 for half the price if ya can find one ... the new Fuma still beats the Noc but at 2/3 the price of the D15.

$46 Fuma

$60 Fuma 2 (1C cooler / 3 dbA quieter)

Well, you are supposed to remove the cooler when shipping the PC....
Don't get me wrong, I see the point though. 2 pounds, PCB only bends slightly.
Off-Roading in the jeep not recommended though. lol.
