So im looking to start building a new PC this fall/winter :) I am going to leave the Mobo/CPU till the end so i can see what AMD has to offer in Zen. So basically everything but the above will be needed. Will be using RX 480 in the new build until i can afford a GTX 1060 :p (ya i know i shoulda got one in the 1st place)

With my daughter starting high school, she will need her own PC and I want to hand her down the 3570K rig after building the above :) Stores i can order from are Newegg.ca, Canada Computers and NCIX. My budget only allows for a piece to be bought every month or so, so i would like to keep parts prices under
$200 CAN for each piece (minus CPU and GPU).

I know there are a lot of good system builders in these forums, so i expect awesome suggestions and advice :)

EDIT: i have no brand preference really, the only thing i would like is compatibility with ram and mobo :p

Build List

Case, PSU, Storagae, peripheals, Os? which parts exactly ? for helping your list?

Regards,

Yea everything is needed. OS, keyboard, etc.. I have 2 full computers and no extra parts. The monitor may be freesync or gsync as my current monitor does 72hz and im happy with it, so either can be put to use depending on gfx card bought as the 480 can use the samsung PLS

I am subscribing to this. I look forward to your build!

I thought you were happy with your 480?

I am but the drivers make me crazy o_O still on 16.7.2 as nothing else runs stable or proper :( also turning off v sync makes things choppy in all games....V sync on and its smooth as butter. IF the driver situation improves i may stick with the 480 and buy a freesync monitor for it. Then i can search buy and sells for a used GFX card for my kids pc as just about ANYTHING i see on them is better then a 6870 currently in use.

the $200 limit is because im pretty much a single dad supporting 2 kids on a fixed income so parts will need to be saved for :)

side note: on kijiji (canadian buy and sell site like craigslist) a local seller is offering 5 i7 2600 NON K for $140 CAN per. I was thinking of buying one for my kids pc to replace the i5 2400. I could still get a lil overclock out of the i7 as i have a z68 board and can push the multi 4X higher then stock. Is that a good price for a used i7 2600?

Peche, im thinking a full size tower that can accomodate AIO w/c, 80+ gold psu and am open to anything else.

Estaric, i am enjoying it, its just the few nagging issues that bug me. When i had my GTX 680 drivers always installed no prob and i always kept up to date. With the RX 480 still being pretty new I guess i should/ could have some leniency towards Crimson drivers. Like i said the cpu/mobo and gpu will be the last things purchased so there will be a lot of time to make a decision on whether to stick with the 480 or go 1060 and give my daughter the 480.

I recommend instead stashing away your loonies until you've built up your budget to buy everything at once.

The problem with buying a few parts at a time is the warranty starts at the time of purchase. And many merchants only have a 30 day return policy - after that, you have to go through the manufacturer if something is DOA. So if you buy a power supply for example, and 2 months later when you get the rest of the parts discover the PSU does not have the connectors, or worse just does not work, you may have problems dealing with a replacement or getting a RMA. Plus there are always new models or model revisions coming out all the time. It would be sad if you buy today and it gets superseded tomorrow while sitting in your closet.

the only thing i would like is compatibility with ram and mobo
When you decide on the motherboard, check the motherboard's QVLs (qualified vendors lists). Just about every maker has one for each of their boards on the board's website. The QVLs are lists of CPUs and RAM the board makers verify are compatible with that specific board. You need to buy a listed CPU. But there are too many RAM makers and RAM models for board makers to test them all. So you don't have to buy listed RAM, but you should buy RAM with the same specs as listed RAM.

I've built both pc's this way, saving up isn't feasible really cause I'm bad at saving that much. I intend to do a bit of research so I know that parts will be compatible. I have never bought a psu that didn't have what I needed connector wise, I try to buy higher end psu's that have more then enough connectors

PSU connectors was just for illustration. The warranty starting was the main point - and new revisions the other.

A few years ago a friend bought this way. His case was one of the first buys. His plan was to buy over 4 paydays (2 months). But he woke up one morning to find his car on blocks and his tires and rims were gone. He had $500 deductible on his insurance so that set his computer parts buying on hold for awhile. During that time, the maker of his case came out with a revised edition that included USB 3.0 ports in front instead of just 2.0. They would not exchange it. And I have heard of several cases where people bought PSUs, drives, or other parts and found out 45 - 60 days later they didn't work right out of the box.

I'm not good at saving up for things either. But out of sight out of mind works for me (most of the time). So when I have extra $$$, I stuff it in my PayPal account. Just a thought.

My nzxt 810 switch is a full tower and I love the amount of space that it has :) not opposed to a mid tower, but it will need to accommodate AIO for the cpu

most of new Tt cases are pretty well priced, also have modular cages that could be taken out for extra space.... i love them i wish the core V51 were available here in my country, also the Tt custom loop Pacific RL ... for making my PC a little bit sexier!

but it will need to accommodate AIO for the cpu
That really has nothing to do with the fact a case is a full tower or mid-tower. The main difference is the size (as in wide - with the rear I/O connector panel away from you) of the motherboard. Full tower boards and cases typically support several more expansion cards and typically several more hard drives. 6-8 drives for a mid-tower vs 10 or more for a full tower. And full towers support more external drive bays.

That said, these number vary greatly. For example, Fractal Design R4 Mid tower is HUGE for mid tower (this is the case I used with this build - HIGHLY recommended).

The point is, the real difference between mid and full towers is height. If you want maximum flexibility for your CPU cooling, you need to look at the width of the case not height.

PC Case Sizes as Fast As Possible

It's a great case. For the same price, however, I might suggest the R5 Titanium Window version. I am not into fancy looks for cases (I tend to pay attention to what's on my monitors) but I like having a side panel windows for much easier maintenance inspections to look for dust build up (which WILL happen even with dust filters) and for a quick glance to make sure all fans are still spinning. Something to think about.

but I like having a side panel windows for much easier maintenance inspections to look for dust build up (which WILL happen even with dust filters) and for a quick glance to make sure all fans are still spinning.

Exactly! I have my case on my desk, but ofc it's also nice to see the hardware in it :D

Now onto a PSU
No, the PSU, while one of the most important purchase decisions, must be the last so you can figure out how much power you need. And you won't know that until you pick your CPU, RAM, drives and GPU.

That said, lately, I really like EVGA Golds.

i never buy a PSU less then 750 watts nowadays, so buying one now wont impact anything IMO. My rent is inclusive so i dont pay for electricity usage thru out the month :) 750 should be more then enough for single GPU and maybe a K series CPU if i go intel :)

That really does not make sense but no harm if you buy way too big (as most do) except to the budget. With a single card, most people can easily get by with 500W.

So? If your system is consuming 400W, with a good PSU that has a flat efficiency curve, it makes no difference if the PSU is a 500W supply or a 1000W supply.

i just like to have more then i need and my comment about electricity is because i usually leave my pc running 24/7 and crunching in the fall/winter/spring

EVGA 750 G2 80+ gold http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=33_1238_443&item_id=069556

I have a G1 in my 3570K rig and I really like it, the reviews for the G2 are even better :)

now days a 80+Bronze 550W PSU may fit most single VGa systems, also your future rig will consume less than 550W,
so as bill tries to tell, is gonna be great to measure your power need and get the right PSU for your needs,

Regards,
