all games crash!

i had that problem with XP so i got Vista and havnt had one problem since.

Do you have a different PC you can test the 1800 in? If so do it.
If no problem on different PC .
Download said to be best CCC suite to desktop.
Then uninstall the CCC and Video Driver reboot run Driver Cleaner Pro and select multiple files box and add CCC and ATI WDM run the deletions .
then reinstall all the .NETS and patches with required reboots.
Then reinstall the Downloaded (said to best CCC for your card)thats on your desktop .
Do an advanced install and deselect WDM and install every thing else .
After install is finished select NO to reboot.
Then go to C:\ATI\SUPPORT\7-10_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_53250\Driver\WDM_ALL and run the Setup.exe to in stall the WDM . (reason for this little obstacle is I have seen many issues getting the WDM to install in the CCC script)...
Then reboot.
Then download DX9c and reinstall.then reboot and run ATITOOL to turn fan to 100% and only use ATITOOL for that function(for now) and test for crashing.

hrm...well not a virus. i just did a fresh install of xp and loaded my legit copy of bf2. i played for about 20 minutes before it completely locked up the system. i ran memtest and it found 0errors. what other tests should i run????

Increase the window size step by step and watch your vga temps permanently.
What happens?
If it crashes, run at stock speeds as suggested before and retry.

P.S.: When your system locks, does the display signal turn off after a time?
Stuttering sound or no sound at all when freezing?
What X1800XT model do you own exactly?

ive watch my temps and both the cpu and gpu are within normal ranges. when it freezes it simply freezes the image and stops the sound. i must reboot to get back to windows.

If that is happening, and you have to phyiscally reset your rig not just CAD it then I can pretty muc guarantee it is your graphics card. The exact same happened to me (like I said before) and when I tried the card in a completely different rig, it did it again. With the other rigs graphic card in my setup it was working fine.
Oh, the same also happened to me with a 256mb 6600GT I tried awhile ago, I forgot about that one. As soon as I got rid of that card and put my old trusty 9550 in it it was back to normal.
Finally, if you only managed 20 odd minutes on a fresh install of XP, that is another thing that points directly to your graphics card to me. Don't have any other systems around your house that you can pinch a card out of?

Do you mean a) EVERY 3D game, or b) every online 3D game?

If a) then drivers or DirectX screwed. Note that bad directX drivers NOT related to the GPU could bring it down, e.g. sound card. Try reinstalling all drivers. Best of all, new format and clean install. Reinstalling DirectX is very hard... it just *donesnt* work. However, the latest DirectX install package as part of COD4 looks good. Fixed a long-time DirectX problem for me. Download COD4.exe. Use winrar to extract directly from the .exe. Go to the DirectX install directory and run setup.

Definatly sounds like a memory issue to me, I had a similar prob about a year ago, as others have said, run memtest but also just drop your memory to stock volts, timings and speed if they are not already and I bet the issue disapears!

memtest passes with no errors. memory is already at stock speeds and everything.

ok, when i get home in 30 minutes i will try a few new things. i dont have any extra cards that could run bf2 so that option is out. i have the latest driver installed but did not install ccc or wdm. i guess i will give that a shot as well. if it does turn out to be the graphics card i guess ill just have to buy an hd 2900 pro

If he just did a fresh copy of XP, re-installing drivers wont help.

Try not using the latest drivers and getting an older verson, one that is known to work (such as 6.* drivers).

I wouldnt rule it down to a heat problem, because ATi tool's fuzzy box thing has always got me to the highest temp for my gfx...


Try looping 3dmark06 and see what happens.

this was happening without ati tool installed and with ccc installed. i did a fresh install of xp, only installed the graphics driver and now have ati tool on. it is no a heat issue at all.

I remember with my old X800, anything past 6.6 would give me random (yet happened all the time) crashes in CSS.

Doesn't have to be a card to run BF2, just any card that will run a game you have lying about.

i ran rthdribl.exe and it went fine for 30 minutes on 1440x900 at the max sample rate and it barely effected temps on the card. however, i play bf2 for about 20 minutes and it crashes the whole system. and any game for that matter.

update: i just played bf2 for 45 minutes and it froze up on me. it did not loop the audio. it just froze the screen. control alt delete did nothing. i had to reset the pc. heat was not an issue as the logs say nothing was remotely hot. again this is on a fresh install of xp with only my legit bf2 installed. it must be my video card but i cant guess why sometimes i can play bf2 for 45 minutes while others only 20 minutes.
