Alternative to Steam

Steam seems to be the most successful website by far when it comes to buying games online, but is there an alternative where you just pay for the game and download it and it's yours and you can install it as many times as you like on different computers? I mean, no need to install software or download manager, no automatic update or patching or whatever. Thanks in advance.

As in install it on a USB/disc to use on multiple rigs?

You dont have to update your Steam games really, if you just download it then put it in Offline Mode, seeing as online games need to be patched to play with everyone else anyways. But like said D2D and Impulse are both good, also Gamersgate.

Direct2Drive might suit my needs as they have an UK version and charge in £ but they use a download manager. http://www.direct2drive.co.uk/staticpage.aspx?topic=about They say it's needed to avoid broken downloads.

Impulse is good as they don't use any DRM, although I do believe you need their desktop software to download/install the games (it is very similar to steam).

I use steam, direct 2 drive, impulse and good old games (for the classics). They all work well although my preference is steam as it's just so nicely integrated and good for joining friends in-game through the friends list.

X fire is one. They offer some features like a frames per second counter, video capture and the library is compatible with any game. However they do cost a tad more than steam

As said D2D never ad a real issue with them and been using them some years now. Worsed that has happened is that a game has ran out of activations but thats easy solved by getting in touch with them which has been resolved with in 3 days..

How many activations they allow? I can't find that on their website.

GOG.com is good for that, though their selection is mostly limited to older games.
