ASUS MSI or AsRock 990FX/A boards should be fine, you may get away with a quality 970 board as well. I would look at the extreme3, gaming pro or sabertooth boards if you can still get them( cheap even).
An extra 8gb of ram will help out too for your system.

Asus all the way as a first choice for AM3+, a Sabertooth 2.0 would be good to use.
A Crosshair V-Z would be the best but pricey in comparison to the other.

ASRock had a few good ones as well, an Extreme 9 is the one to look for if you can find one at all and it won't be cheap.

STAY AWAY from MSI and their cheap components/VRM's, nothing but trouble waiting to happen and yes, I've had at least three of those go out on me for that exact reason. That's not even counting the 790FX-GD70 I lost to the same issue running it at stock instead of OC'ed before all that.

I must agree with this. I had a MSI 970A G43 and a FX 8300. I ran at stock, and even lowered voltage and added a heatsink to the mosfets. It died and took my CPU with it after 2 years. The only exception would be the MSI 970 Gaming. A friend of mine is running his FX 6300 on it for around 5 years with no issues. Other than that any 990 board would be the best option.

I'd say don't do any 970 board. My ASUS couldn't even take a 6300 at stock.

The 970 Pro gaming/aura is pretty good at least, handled my 8150 on dice just fine.

I think mine was the M5A97 R2.0 that failed. Oh well, upgraded when that happened.

Do yourself a favor and sell it off, its such a terrible CPU that my 8 year old M18X can beat it with a mild OC.

I have to agree, repurpose your ram and move over to a 4th gen intel system cheap

Yeah me2 and I just purchased one. The issue is 990 boards are expensive and cheaper boards cant cope with the power draw. I'm even down clocking to protect the board. If all you have is the CPU, I would sell it and try get a 3770 or something similar.
