Had high hopes for this, but with a proprietary version of Android, forget it. Though there will no doubt be hacks to run the "standard" Honeycomb OS.

Agreed know doubt someone will come along and attempt a port of Honeycomb to the device.

Heck, there is still a honeycomb port in the works for my OG Droid.

Meh, maybe the propietary Android won't be so bad and it is priced right. Like both of you have said, there'll be a Honeycomb port to the Fire soon enough.

Ah "Kindle"... the app on my Droid 2 that was installed automatically, with no option to remove it, and with automatic update enabled by default. I shutter to think of the kind of BS they would pull actually having full control over your device.

It sounds like for $199 you are going to be force-fed the amazon experience. It's a shame to take such an open and versatile platform and lock it down so tightly - for reasons that don't benefit the user in any way.

Indeed. The Nook Color can be rooted to run Android (don't know what version), and does it pretty well, though a friend in the office with one has had his "Market" application and Andriod Mail apps removed mysteriously.

Google: "We are not evil (unless we wanna be)"

Amazon: "We'll collect as much data about you as we can (with the help of Google)"

if your rooted then download rootexplorer and you are able to delete preinstalled apps that way

This is looking beast to me. Especially once cyanogen mod gets ahold of it. I look at is as a very affordable way to get a dual core tablet that will be perfect once its rooted.

Clear. They are selling this as a loss-leader in order to capture future revenue streams from sales of books and media through amazon. Their business model is like the console manufacturers... give away the console at production cost... make your profit on the sale of games. Just swap books for games. It's a book console

This is why I won't buy a kindle...

THAT arrived in my Amazon login-screen TODAY (29.9.11). LOOK at that! Beztos, pretending THIS is the "NEW Kindle". But where is the Touch or Fire models? And they want £89 for this edition which is the low-spec, the same as is being sold in the US at $79. At £89 people will assume this is the better $99 Touch version. But it isnt. Is amazon trying to use the positive PR that they are getting with the Fire to dump the low spec stock on unwary unsuspecting customers?

I find that type of sales tactic rather dishonest.

Tell the people there is the new Fire or Touch models, but they won't be available in the UK for x weeks time, rather than pawning them off with the rubbish edition... I find it all unsavoury trickery.

Exactly. Why all the whining about a (cheap) tablet that has a locked down OS is mind boggling to me. How is this a surprise?

This isn't an iPad (or Android) tablet because if it was, then it wouldn't be as cheap as it is.
