AMD’s Big Navi is “going to disrupt 4K gaming" once it’s got the mainstream market dealt with

sure, but we should also not take their word for it until it's actually done.
Why not? They've delivered beat for beat what they've been promising for the last 2.5 years, and their stride is only improving. I personally think there is much room for optimism.

Because that's basically madness. Some people I trust like that, but corporations, no matter their record? Nah. Not because they're AMD, but because ... I mean we don't actually know until after the fact.

I said optimism, not complete trust. Try to keep things in proper context please.

Probably a 2080 Ti competitor?

Optimism also has to be reasonable. The "leaked" card, even if it's real, is most likely a workstation/server variant. 24GB GDDR6 and 300W TDP is a dead giveaway, since 7nm+ and "optimistic" improvements in RDNA2 can't really account for nearly 50% more CUs and triple memory at only 9% TDP bump. Most likely the next iteration of MxGPU or beefier Radeon Pro WX, since it wasn't really updated since Polaris and can make it into the TDP envelope if slightly underclocked. My bet is on MxGPU.

Last time AMD swore their cards were made for 4k, not for FHD, we ended up with Vega. Here's hoping it will be different this time around.

Hey even Fiji and the magical HBM was advertised for 4K 5 years ago.

Yep. That's why I can't understand some uneducated classifications, like "card for 1080p gaming" or "card for 1440p gaming", cause while people weight their decisions based on popular opinions and grandma's sayings, I've been playing games at 1440p and 2160p even on GTX950 2G :D :D :D

That's pretty obscure. What settings are you playing at? What games are you playing? What is an acceptable frame rate for you?

That's exactly what I'm talking about. You can't generalize games by playable resolution, hence "4K GPU" is an idiotic term.
My 2060S is not a "4K" card, but I can play most of my library at 4K60Hz maxed out (right now blasting through Wolfenstein: The New Colossus).
Back in GTX950 days it was a variety of titles, ranging from Dota2 to Bioshock Infinite. Lots and at various settings. The best experience was w/ Alien Isolation @1440p nearly maxed out. I thought my 950 would suffocate even at 1080p, but few minor tweaks in settings and config made it not just playable, but smooth and beautiful.

The 4K capable stuff always seemed pretty blurry. Then when PS4 Pro and XboxOne X arrived, it pretty much just meant “output at 4K.” I can play Destiny 2 at 4K resolution at 60FPS on my RX 570 4GB—I just have to set the resolution scaling to 50%!

It's my least favorite marketing gimmick. What resolution a GPU is capable of is a goalpost that moves every generation, sometimes between generations. Back in 2009 the Radeon HD 5870 was absolutely overkill for 1920x1200, and was even comfortable running Crysis Warhead over 30FPS. By late 2012 it was getting kicked off the bottom of the charts for 1080p gaming, delivering less than 30FPS in most new titles.

Considering 3080 will be out by then, yes, a 2080Ti competitor.
Yeah that's what I thought. Nice to have the perf level cap raised for team red, but competing with Nvidia's flagship from a year ago makes me sad. I can't see this being hugely faster than the 2080 Ti, at least not faster enough to allow Radeon to keep the "GPU performance crown" Since NVidia will have the 3080 Ti/3080 basically ready to launch at that point as you said.

If it's well priced, has the featureset (DXR+VRS), it will be a great product though.

I said "sure" to your optimism, so I assumed the "why not" was directed at the "don't take their word for it".

Well I want to replace my Vega 64(s) so there better be a high end Navi coming this year and AMD if you are listening make them crossfire compatible or I will just find 2 2080TIs on the used market.
