Opinions please... I can't afford to upgrade everything at once, so... Do you think an AMD 1700 running at 3.7 GHz on all cores would keep up with a 5700 XT video card? It's an eight core processor of course, but I'm concerned about the first generation Ryzen's less than stellar single core performance.

I would think you would be fine. The 1700 isn't exactly a slouch. I have been running a 4770k with a V56 and it is still feeding it.

should be fine.
what ram are you using ?

r7 1700 is not among fastest gaming cpus, but in your situation it'd be stupid to put all your money anywhere but graphics card.

Samsung UHD (2160p) at 60Hz with Freesync... But, the 5700 HD won't run all games at UHD. Many would have to be run at 1440p.

Umm, 4k...yeah, no. Pretty much all your games will need to be 1440 unless you wanna turn all the eye candy down.

This has nothing to do with the CPU though. The 1700 will be fine for that.

imo stretch the budget to whatever gpu you can afford.
get 3600 later when you can.matisse will utilize your ram too and the gains can be YUGE

I understand. From the reviews I've read, I was thinking the same thing. UHD is indeed what most people call 4k, but 4k is 4096, and UHD is 3840, but that's splitting hairs, of course.

may wanna look at the prices of entry level 2070 super cards,if the difference is small then go with 2070S for 4K

The 3600 has about the same multicore performance as the overclocked 1700, but it does it on six cores instead of eight. On fewer cores, it blows away the 1700, though. I'm thinking about getting the 3700x at some point.

I'm running a Freesync monitor, so would probably stick with AMD. Not all monitors work well with NVidia's on Freesync. Besides, I'm an underdog kind of guy.

As to CL, yes. I'm running what's recommended by that popular DRAM Ryzen calculator. It's running well with those settings.

Bad idea. Money doesn't grow on trees. With good monitors, Free Sync should fine with NV.

I've owned all brands - I'm not a fanboy - but AMD is usually the better bargain. I will look into the 2070 though. Sounds interesting.

The Ryzen 7 2700 is on sale at Amazon for $178.48 USD or a used is $160 USD (shows back ordered until October 5th.)

For $200, I think I'd go with the 3600. I'll probably save up, and go 3700x, though.

I am eye balling the 2080S. As I just ordered a new setup, I don't really feel like dropping $700 more.

3600 is faster for gaming.Higher IPC and better hi-speed ram tolerance.there's nothing 16 threads can do for gaming that 12 threads can't.IPC matters for every game, including the multi threaded ones too.
multicore scores are relevant for video and rendering, not for gaming.

3600 and 2070 super is probably the best value combo for 4k/high refresh gaming out there atm.

Just because Zen 2 was released dosnt all of a sudden make your 1700 bad, the 1700 is still a capable cpu, more than enough for a 5700xt.

Yeah probably. I'm running a 1700 with Vega64 and not looking to upgrade yet.

What I don't get, why the hell people call 1440p as 2K? When we say 3840x2160 as 4K, then 2K should be Full-HD's 1920x1080..
