i am planning to buy 1800x. I was waiting for mini ITX but decided to buy a 100$ micro board for now and later upgrade.

I want to know if anyone tried disabling 4C/8T and overclock remaining 4C/8T to say 4.8ghz or more and if it helps gaming..

Please don't advice me to go intel 6700 or 7700 as I am only investing money on AMD and also run VM and need more cores when I run VMs...

The idea is to set profile to run games with OC for games and run all cores for VM and other video work..

I will be adding H100i as well... and 32GB 3200mhz C14 ram..

Unfortunately, from the few I have spoken with it does not really help. The process they are on is the limiting factor and requires just to much voltage at a certain point for each core to be stable even when you cut the chip down (Heat and power draw ain't the main issue). One of my friends said he has one cut down stable at 4.3ghz but I have not seen it at that with my own eyes and he said its at a pretty high setting for power and such.

Not sure how the actual 4 and 6 core chips will perform, I hope a little more in the overclocking range but I am not holding my breath.

Your max is probably going to be 4.1 like everyone else or 4.2 if your lucky in the drawing.

Top 73% of the 1800x's will hit 4.0Ghz while only the top 21% will do 4.1Ghz.

If all you do is gaming, why bother with these? In the long run they will beat Intel as core use goes up, but the 7700k will not be obsolete for a long time.

It doesnt really help gaming... the c14 ram boosts it, and using process lasso boosts it too by alot. Keep it 4GHz full tilt/hope you get a 4.1 chip and you will be set for games. There is no difference with tweaking between my 6700K and 1800X in games with the exception of fallout 4 for whatever reason.

I'd be inclined to go for the 1700 instead, overclocked it isn't going to be far off and you save even more cash too.

I don't want to save money. Just want the best AMD can offer as I don't like over paying to intel. I almost ordered 6900k sometime back and then canceled it.

I have a specific question and I am looking for that specific answer.. 4c/8t OC on 1800x

Fair enough, but the fact they all seem to top out around the same 4/4.1Ghz at best it seems a waste to spend more.

But yep, it's your cash, hopefully someone can shed further light on your specific scenario.

Yes. It didn't help, most will hit 4.2 on 4/8.

I don't understand the drama at all. Games run fine with 1800X even with full enable everything.

Same thing as people whining how HT negatively affects games. I don't care! They run super smooth anyway, why would I make drama around it? I just have it enabled and laugh at people with silly 8 threaded quad cores...

Unfortunately I am not you. I have a specific question as I want to know facts and I love OC

I have been with AMD since 1800+ and currently have phenom X6 1100T that runs at 3.8GHz... i deliberately missed FX8350 crap as I only have a 280x running all my games well without CPU bottleneck

I am planning to upgrade CPU ram mobo and wait for vega as I have upgraded my monitor to a Samsung 9series quantum dot 65inch tv

I use AMD overdrive to set profile for games and other apps including VMs

I love messing around and want to know 4c/8t OC results of 1800x

It's just for my to know and that's not going to change what I am going to do which is to order 1800x this week

Ryzen's are made on LPP. Anyone expecting miraculous overclock is how should I say this nicely, foolish...

I am not so sure about that. Would wait for someone to post who actually owns one.

Well, there have been enough reviews to determine that the chip can't generally go higher than 4.2 unless you go LN2 for 24/7 setup.

But that is on all core my friend. I am only looking for 4C/8T OC which is half the processor. It should go at least a little higher. That is why I want someone who owns to try and let me know

That has been done pretty much as soon as the CPU was released.

No go. The chip limitation is 4.2ghz which quite frankly isn't too bad for the first chip of the generation.

Ok thanks. then will buy this and will wait for second generation to upgrade. Hope it comes on same AM4 socket.

A few places I have read have done this. They all achieved about the same 4ghz overclock even when disabling cores.

Then I think will go with B350 micro board for now. Anyway it's stuck at 4 :/

And 16c ram instead of 14
