Got a PSU tester? When in doubt, use one of them. They'll tell you in a minute if the PSU killed itself to prevent equipment damage (zero signs of life when exposed to the mains).

If you don't have a PSU tester, you can still jump the PSU 20/24-pins to force it to turn on. Make sure everything is unplugged first. If no signs of life, yup, it's dead.

I had one in a box somewhere - i think it was a Thermaltake Dr. Power II but i'll have to dig it up.

If you never saw even a fan spin then there is no question about it, the PSU was dead. Bad CPU, RAM, whatever, the fans should at the very least spin for a few seconds.

Honestly you could have chosen to do things a little bit better the PSU looked like a red flag from the moment you changed both the CPU and motherboard.

I looked through the comments carefully but don't recall seeing you mention that ? Well, if you did try 2 different PSUs, then I am lost. What are the chances of everything failing simultaneously , twice ?

Edit: did you put the board in a case and tried booting each time ? Maybe it's shorting the board.

I once replaced a mains cable ie, the one from the wall to the PSU and found that to be the culprit.

To answer both your queries.....

Built everything on a cardboard box to see if it was working. No power on.... I switched powersupply to a spare GQ unit that i use for testing. No power on...

Well long story short. DR. Power II told me both PSUs were DEAD. I have no idea what killed them. No loud noise. no smoke, no nothing.

The first psu damaged the motherboard when dying, the motherboard damaged the second psu when trying to boot from that. You exchanged it for another motherboard and tried to boot it with now 2 broken psu's. If your luck was real bad, one of the broken psu's could have damaged that second motherboard also, and so on and on.
Pure speculation from my side ofcourse, modern boards should be protected from such things, wouldn't they?
Anyway, I once had a dying psu kill my ethernet card, luckily though that was all it killed. So not entirely impossible.

No proof. the first mobo most likely would've worked if i had a working PSU. I'll know whats what when the new PSU gets in tomorrow.

I would say the original system that had the earthing issue... something on that board with the 4670k must of shorted with the earthing then shorted the PSU. but like i said. I actually had the system up and running after i managed to unbork the bios... no loud noises, no smoke, no signs of anything from the outside to signify that the PSU had died.

Cable? Yes. Does lamp work in the specific socket you tried the PSU on? Not sure how outlets are set up in UK but some types of NEMA outlets, the two sockets can disconnect from each other causing one to work and the other to not work.

Power is a bitch - I've seen it do really odd things to POS computers at my last job. Bad power could do anything from blow out ports to outright kill the entire computer.

Sometimes it's odd things - bad power at the wall. People will argue with me up and down that they have other devices plugged into the wall or power strip and they power on just fine. After multiple POS computers at the same location, dying or having odd electrical issues I'd refuse to send them a new POS computer until they got an electrician to test the outlets. Generally they would give in, hire an electrician and they'd get the issue fixed or have a power conditioner setup at that spot. After that, no more issues.

I'm not saying you have bad power at the spot you're using. Maybe you just ran into bad luck like I did once.
You could try seeing if the PSUs work using a paperclip, even though you say you used a power supply tester already. That's what I ended up doing with all my TSing when I had my MB die on me. I tried three different PSUs and none of them would power the board. I made sure they actually came on doing the paper clip test. Knowing the PSUs at least powered on, I had to get a new MB. I picked up a new MB and the damn thing turned out to be DOA. I had to get a second new MB to resolve my issue.

Tried 3 different cables from the same outlet. The outlet is a double and the lamp sits in the next one.

Its almost as if the the Power Supply is absolutely dead. The original PSU which was replaced about a year or two ago also exhibits the same readouts.

PSUs are supposed to shunt themselves instead of letting an overvoltage pass by and damage further hardware. What caused it is anyone's guess. The fact it happened twice is very concerning.

I've got an Asus motherboard that won't come to life with any other PSU than the one it was originally built with and all the other PSUs that I tried on it, work with every other motherboard I've got.
I'm looking forward to reading the results of the OPs progress, once he gets the new PSU. This is baffling.

Yep, a good PSU will just gracefully shut down, even if it kills itself in the process, to protect the rest of the hardware.

It only cost me another £90 for a new PSU (EVGA GQ750) but WE HAVE IGNITION!!

Damn... Now im gonna have to put away the impact hammer I was gonna use to exorcise this cursed build..
