Greetings,

Since I built this machine in 3-2008 I've oced this cpu from 2.6ghz to 3.0ghz & now seem to be having a issue. I got Fallout3 & noticed some crashes. My wife is running L4D & HL DM & has been complaining about crashes. I didn't think too much about it until I did my yearly OS reinstall & got a new v-card. I read forums and noticed L4D & F3 crash alot & chalked it up to that. On a whim I updated my bios & forgot to OC anything & noticed I'm no longer getting crashes. So how is my OC acting up now....heat? I may clean the inside of the headsink..I've noticed some dust buildup.

Thoughts?

It's well known that OC'ing lowers the life of the part in question. It won't perform as it did when you first OC'd it. Also, that dust build up could be your problem. More heat is being trapped by the dust and slowly roasting your CPU.

You could always throttle back a bit, and still get great performance.

what you can try to do is clean up your case of dust as sonido sed. clean everything and take off the heatsink of the CPU and clean off old compund and reapply new, i recomend AC MX-2 as it doesnt dry up over time. I usually clean my case every 2 months or so since the dust just likes to pile up there.

like the others have said it could be heat and it could just be the chip degrading. It happens over time with a overclock. What voltage was it running at when overclocked also temps on idle and load

Sounds like the life of cpu going. I have a 4000+ (2.1ghz) wich used to oc to 2.7 and now nearly 2 years later struggles to reach 2.3.
