AMD today announced that its board of directors elected President and COO Dirk Meyer as the company’s chief executive officer. Meyer succeeds Hector Ruiz, who will become executive chairman of AMD and chair of the board of directors. As executive chairman, Ruiz will ensure a smooth executive leadership transition, focus on driving the company’s asset smart strategy to completion, and assist with high-level government and strategic partner relations.

“Dirk’s election to CEO is the final phase of a two-year succession plan developed and implemented jointly by AMD’s board of directors and executive team,” said Robert Palmer, lead independent director. “Under Hector’s strong leadership, AMD drove the industry adoption of pervasive 64-bit and multicore computing, became a trusted enterprise-class partner to leading technology suppliers and significantly expanded its global footprint in high-growth markets like China.

Finally, an open light at the end of the cave. I hope this guy can turn the tables for Phenom as its getting screwed over by Intel. I remember when the AMD Athlon X2 was the corn of the cob in one of the first dual-core generations, those were the good time untiil Core 2 rolled. Anyway, moving on. GO KICK SOME ASS AMD!!!! DRINKS ARE ON ME AT THE PUB AFTER THIS!!!!

This is a good change I think. Ruiz wasnt all that bad, but granted, he wasnt all that good. The best thing he probably done was the 64 bit cpu Athlons (if he even had anything to do with that) With this diversified team, things should get remarkably better for AMD. I know for a fact that alot of Dells Servers (blades and racks) are AMD Dual Core Opterons 2XXX series. Every transit case server we have here (3510s, 4600s, case 1, 2, etc use them). Hopefully they can get more product out there and finally start advertisements.

I will be getting AMD's next socket when ever that comes out. Cause atm my 134$ budget dual core beats everything AMD's got in gaming and ocing.. I just hope they come out with something good cause Intel has been dominating for awile now..

Odd, for news like this I kinda expected another hundred responses. o.o

I take it as good news. Hector always kinda seemed like a putz anyway. Maybe... just maybe... they'll get a GOOD marketing department up and running. I want some AMD vs. Intel commericals resembling the Mac vs. PC ones. Mac blows fatties, but commercials like that draw a LOT of attention, even if they are horribly inferior...

lets hope this change brigs about some decent cpu's and more importantly some decent advertizing (something amd has never understood)

Hector did alot more than Athlon64 they brought him into AMD back in 1998 and he got the ball rolling on the K7 later named AMD Athlon CPU. He single handily turned AMD around, i can understand why the market tanked, its not his fault for the failing company, its those damn engineers not being able to work the bugs out of K10 on time
