I watched the live stream and was absolutely gobsmacked by the performance improvement. Then I read a detailed review and came away with the thought process that Intel will really have to do some serious R&D to catch AMD. The major difference is that AMD is using chiplets. In the review it did state that Intel is also going to chiplets but are 2 years behind AMD in that technology. Regardless of that there is no denying that AMD are making the PC space good for consumers due to their pricing structure.

So... we get a timeline from AMD and a timeline from Intel, but AMD's is good? :D
Yeah except only one is delivering new(er) products at breakneck speed, while the other is trying to find what lake to name their respun Si after this :peace:

Oh wow. So no Zen 2+ or Zen 3+.
That's what I thought too. I was like... "Wait, I thought 2020 was going to have Zen 2+" similar to Intel's old tick-tock (or tock-tick) model. I guess not.

I wonder what Zen 3 will mean for us consumers? I can only hope that they can get clock speeds much higher. AMD may have beaten Intel in the IPC department; unfortunately, Intel has AMD beat in terms of clock speed which makes up for Intel's IPC deficit. AMD really needs to get clock speeds much closer to 5 GHz.

I have been hearing a lot from Intel but have only seen the smoke and mirrors. AMD actually has product for sale.

But Intel did show off a sticker..... I guess you could show us the sticker gains, how much IPC and Thz you get with a sticker that is. 0ns latency measurements on their new chips, and their new GPU, mostly since they aren't available, but look at that number... 0ns of latency... Who would have thought it possible, certainty not the knights of Ni..... Maybe it's the measurement of how long does it take a Intel fanboi to thread crap when it's about AMDs actual new product. But it can't be that, they have to mitigate for so many security issues.....

We'll have to see if zen3 is another (major) tick like zen2 or just a minor bump, also Tick Tock officially died 5 or 6 years back with Haswell.

Not that it matters too much, but if AMD can pull another rabbit from their hat then Intel's gonna be in serious trouble even post ICL or whatever they put on 7nm.

And we're back to trench warfare again…

The launch of Zen 2 marks the beginning of at least ~3 years of exciting years ahead. Both AMD and Intel have several new architectures (or upgraded architectures) lined up, which is something we haven't seen in many years.

I do hope AMD can continue to keep up the tempo and don't slow down the improvements with Zen 3...5.
Some rumors point to 4-way SMT and application specific instructions in Zen 3, but I hope these rumors are wrong, like most of the Zen 2 rumors were.

Well over them, even in AVX512 scenario, where Intel still has some edge, you get this:

People are mistaking Ryzen 3000 vs Intel with higher clock, to server chips, which run at close clock.

What a steal too, it only costs 40% more to gain a whopping 2% performance advantage! We won't even talk about the power consumption differences which really add up when you are talking about dozens or even hundreds of servers.

So much hype. Still can't beat Intel in overall performance.

What? :D It can't beat Intel in gaming (=4-5% difference in FHD only with a 2080Ti. Who the hell uses a 2080Ti for FHD? :D With a 2080 on FHD, there's zero difference) and beats Intel in single and multi core. That's why AMD is outselling Intel 2 or 3 to 1 in Germany, Japan, in the UK or in the USA. So please stop lying. Or are you a paid Intel employee?

Intel can't respond. They got rid of the Nvidia moles, so why give them any info?

Should have assassinated the moles and sent Nvidia a message.

As an owner of a 3900x I can confirm that it is not faster than intel in single threaded tasks. I seem to be getting within 5% the performance as a stock 9700k/9900k. With a little overclocking, the Intel cpu would push that gap further than 5%.

The problem is that ryzen 3000 are 4.2ghz chips, and boost doesn't really make the chip run faster except during idle loads. If ryzen 3000 actually ran at its advertised boost speed, then amd would genuinely have the faster chip.

I think this is what both camps will do: l4 cache.
Think like a Hbm stack on package which will seriously increase performance.
It's easy to do its just economics that decide.
But beyond that I don't think anyone have any idea of rabbits you can pull out other than density and cores with the shrinks the next 6? Years.

I was a firm intel customer until now, just brought an amd 3900x and would not go back to intel, i think they rely too much on getting the fastest clock speed above all else. i have a corsair h150i aio cooler and cpu temps are 30 degrees at 4ghz.

pretty likely for ddr5 i'd say (Zen 4 1st implementation), but i doubt pcie5 will be mainstream ready that early.

PCIe 5 will require more expensive motherboards, so I assume it will remain a premium/enterprise feature for a while.

i feel like zen + was a stopgap while waiting for 7nm duv to be ready anyway, zen 1 fealt like this; are we still in business? this wont sink us will it? and zen + fealt like; are we sure were good? confirm the kill
So they went from a Cpu design that was monolithic, but capable of being mcm combined to one that optimised(yes only optimised) that design then they split that same design out even more into chiplets while improving the chips again and dropping a node.

While in that time Intel kept pretty much the same design, added some cores and not much else.

How would you evolve a design through 3 node sizes and a dramatic / evolutionary change in layout and manufacture.

They did indeed risk A Lot and unlike intel they had a progressive plan so yes each part Was a Step towards something better.

You make it sound like a negative this Inovation.
Yet that's how chips are intelligently designed and built.

Oh, and thank you, Sony & Microsoft, for saving AMD with semi-custom business, while customers were opting for slower and more expensive cards from its competitors.
