AMD's RS780 and NVIDIA's MCP 78 IGP chipsets are scheduled to go head-to-head in the first quarter of 2008, however, performance of the MCP 78S is reportedly below that of the RS780, while the higher-end MCP 78U is causing issues due to its higher thermal dissipation giving AMD the advantage over the chipset battle, according to various sources at motherboard makers sited by DigiTimes. The RS780 is reported to have 15-20% better performance than the MCP 78S in 3DMark 05 and 06 tests, while the higher-end MCP 78U cannot function normally with the original passive northbridge heatpipe due to the higher core frequencies of the graphics engine. Adopting a larger heatpipe or fan will cause costs to rise significantly, a heat problem which is present in all NVIDIA chipsets. Additionally, motherboard makers have not yet taken delivery of MCP 78 chipset supplies, which means that the original launch schedule of motherboards might have to be postponed back to the end of January or beginning of February. On the other hand, RS780 motherboards will be ready to ship in January 23 next year. AMD has also fixed an issue with the SB700 southbridge caused by a malfunction of the internal clock generator. Although motherboard makers will need to add an external one to solve the problem for now, AMD has notified its partners that the issue will be fixed in an updated SB710 chipset.

just wondering as the last igp was that one with the x700 in it and it was like stuck at doom3 and possibly oblivion as what it could manage

Been a long time since an IGP chipset could keep up with current games, even at low resolutions and settings. Not that they need to, most IGP motherboards are going to into systems that will never or rarely see any 3D action.

But Hybrid Crossfire is looking decent. Be able to CrossFire with IGP and GPU on the cheap. What would be nice is if the RS780 could do x8 + x8, so you could Tri-Fire! :D

That is good news... although I normally do not get very excited about IGP, because their performance is normally very low. BUT, if these new IGP chips can handle high definition video and take the load off the CPU, then they will be wonderful for home theater PCs!! Not having to use a video card in a home theater sysem means lower power requirements and less heat. :)

They would be good for small gaming on a home theatre pc.

Man i just realised that to e able to crossfire on the cheap is amazing well done AMD good job!

I always liked AMD boards, they always had the best igp.

I really don't see much of this as being important imo. Most if not all intel boards with integrated graphics are intel integrated graphics. Amd is usually ati, but some nvidia. And since Intel is selling more desktop chips most of the market belongs to intel integrated which is yuck.

great news to hear out of AMD/ATI . . . I was truly hoping to see that AMD/ATI would start offering some kick-ass chipsets, it's a niche they are truly posed to take

whats the chipset like for amd does it have a good graphics core
just wondering as the last igp was that one with the x700 in it and it was like stuck at doom3 and possibly oblivion as what it could manage

they're decent . . . not anywhere near what a dedicated VGA adapter is capable of, but the ATI/Intel chipsets were/are some of the best around for integrated video.

My old Intel mobo had an ATI Xpress 200 SSB; it managed Doom3 and Quake 4 at somewhate playable FPS with moderate eye candy. They're really meant more for those that don't intend to do a lot of gaming, though - i.e. Media Center PCs

Hopefully it will be a better choice than the 690G and 690V HTPC boards out there. They are great, but a higher core/chip IGP would be awesome.
