Hi,

I am looking at my nephews computer and just trying to get input on what you all think. He has a pretty old computer with a AMD HD 5670 which seems to run fine while the display drivers are Microsoft Basic Adapter. But as soon as I update them to the AMD HD 5670 drivers it may work for a bit but after a while or launching a game the screen will go blue/black/red/ or white with grey lines and freeze. After that the computer won't boot back up except into safe mode, then if I delete the AMD HD 5670 drivers it will boot again. I have tried the graphics card in another computer and the same thing so I suspect its the graphics card or their drivers are just bad. I had thought maybe it could be the PSU but since it works fine without the drivers and I have since unhooked 2 disc drives from the PSU I don't think so.

You need to list the full system specs, including what Operating System you're running, and what version of drivers you're attempting to install.

For the record, the HD 5670 is no longer supported by AMD's most current drivers.

Yeah could be it just went to amd website for the HD 5670 and downloaded the Catalyst Software Suite for windows 10 64 bit.

Not at home right now but my brother said he bought it at Best Buy like 8 years ago. Has a crappy Dell ATI HD 5670 OEM GPU. So I guess I could try this driver https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=7dp14

Id say its one of the dell 8300s

You’re literally limited to one Legacy Driver if you install this one and still have issues it’s probably a hardware issue
Yeah thats the driver I download when it freaks out.

Well that appears to be a Windows 7 driver. The link I posted at least has all the OS choices and is the most “current“

Any ways the one you linked is the one I had been downloading for windows 10 64 bit that would cause it to crash. But it seems like any driver thats not Microsoft Basic Adapter makes it crash. I also tested the GPU in the XPS 420 and it did same thing with those drivers.

Well I mean you could try the drivers you found as a last ditch effort but I don have high hopes of a different result. It sounds like the card is on its way out. The MS basic adapter isn’t anything more than to provide basic video function.

If it's crashing after installation of drivers you could be looking at a dead card. 2d and 3d are separated so to speak so often it will work fine with the Microsoft basic driver because it's using 2d or software rendering. When you install the driver windows will use the card to render graphics instead of the cpu. If your gpu is defective then it will show issues with drivers installed.

May be time for another gpu. Try for a used 1050. These often don't need a pcie power connection and may help with the old power supply as well.

For the amount of green cards I seen burn up there could of been some money returned for sure. And by the way the green cards crash the piggy bank.

Did you do in-place OS upgrade or wipe and install OS fresh? I have seen similar issues when OS was upgraded.

Since it's old computer, try cleaning (with Air can) the PCI-E slot and neighboring areas. Last night I was installing windows 10 on an old computer which has Nvidia GF 210 card in it. Installed latest Nvidia drivers (that is compatible with W10) and every other time I boot, display is all corrupted. Uninstalled drivers went back to Windows drivers, everything is fine. Reinstall drivers issue starts. Cleaned all slots no luck. Changed boards, used same OS installation + video card + NV drivers, now all good.

One other thing you can try is to apply fresh TIM and see if that helps.
