Although ASUS scored some headlines by announcing the world's first socket FM2+ motherboards last week, and although those motherboards are designed to support current socket FM2 chips, it won't be before 2014, that the first socket FM2+ APUs, codenamed "Kaveri," will arrive. Kaveri's successor is already a blimp on the radar for tech industry analysts, codenamed "Carrizo." Slated for 2015, these chips are said to introduce support for DDR4 system memory, and TDP across the board, rated at 65W, probably because silicon fab processes available to AMD at the time could favor it.

I wonder if FM2+ Richlands support PCI-Express 3.0... also, it is said that FM2+ will work with Carizzo as well... with what? A DDR4 relaunch, or?

PCIe 3.0 and DDR4 offer no advantages at this time for desktop or laptop use. Maybe down the road 4-7 years there may be some use for PCIe 3.0, but DDR4 has no advantage at all for either desktop or laptop. It is primarily of value for servers and in fact can be more costly than DDR3 as you must install all of the RAM from the get go as you can't just add RAM as you can with DDR3 and earlier DDR RAM.

As far as Kaveri is concerned, several APUs will start shipping in Q4 '13 as originally planned. The rest of the product line will ship in H1 '14, also as planned. Some folks are trying to put a damper on AMDs Kaveri products because they will be industry changing for the better. You can figure out who has the most to lose when Kaveri arrives. That would be the same company who has delayed 14nm chippies because of technical issues.

Any of the FM2+ mobos will support Kavari.

I'll start talking about it towards the end of 2014.. which is over a year away. Right now this is all irrelevant.

will fm2+ be backward compatible?

Yes. Per AMD's naming scheme, them keeping the FM2 and just adding "+" means there will be some backwards compatibility. Current FM2 chips should still work on FM2+ boards, but FM2+ chips may not work on FM2 boards.

Seriously?!
Do you have a reference please?

DDR4 is ditching channel topology and instead uses point2point (network-like) topology - every DIMM is essentially a channel.
It could mean that maximum bandwidth can be obtained only if all memory slots on the motherboard are populated.
