Following a recent move to speed-bump the Athlon II X2 with the Athlon II X2 255, AMD is planning a similar update for the Phenom II X2 lineup, with the Phenom II X2 555. This model makes it clear that an increment of 5 in the model number indicates bump in default clock multiplier of 0.5X, while that of 10 indicates a full 1.0x increase. Keeping with this trend, Phenom II X2 555 is clocked at 3.20 GHz (16.0 x 200 MHz), a 100 MHz increase. Based on the 45 nm Callisto core, the processor features a total chip cache of 7 MB (2x 512 KB L2 + 6 MB L3), a 4000 MT/s HyperTransport interface, and an unlocked bus multiplier. Expected to be available later this month, the Phenom II X2 555 could carry a price-tag of 80 EUR.

Trying to offer a wide variety. What the hell do you care anyways? HA HA, I mean yeah they are putting a proc for every price point but you also have those always got to upgrade with new tech folks out there.

Quadcores Athlons now , and more to come . What the hell man ..

AMD is doing nothing different from what any company does -- sell a bunch of different products at a bunch of different pricepoints.

If you don't want the PII X2 555, buy the 550, and shut yer yap.

If they stop making the 550, then buy the 555, and consequently, shut yer yap.

When overclocking higher binned chips do better, your 9 year old brother may not realize that the 100mhz difference is differently binned and could have a high possibility with proper cooling.

As far as too many products, I wouldn't really say so...

Single Core - Light load Proc
-Sempron 140 - $36.99 (Can unlock to dual core I believe)

Dual Core Regors - Good proc at a good price, no L3 so will be worse clock for clock by 10 - 15% than L3 brothers (Can unlock to Quads)
-Regor 240 2.8ghz - $60.00
-Regor 245 2.9ghz - $66.00
-Regor 250 3.0ghz - $77.00

Dual Core Callisto's - Great Procs that come in a bit under the Tricores and can unlock to quads.
-Callisto 545 3.0ghz - $89.99
-Callisto 550 BE 3.1ghz - $102.00

Tri Cores Heka - Awesome procs that perform in gaming as good as Quads (Can unlock to Quads).
-Heka 705e 2.5ghz - $116.00 - This is the energy efficient proc, people don't buy these on the same basis as the other procs so hard to count them in the normal list.
-Heka 720 BE 2.8ghz - $124.99 - Amazing proc for the price (Intel has no competitor for this)

Quad with L3 cut a bit
-810 2.6ghz - $144.99

Quad Deneb
-Deneb 945 3.0ghz - $169.99
-Deneb 905e 2.5ghz - $184.99 - Like I said another E proc, look at the price, people pay for energy efficiency as the save off it in the long run.
-Deneb 955 BE 3.2ghz - $189.00
-Deneb 965 BE 3.4ghz - $245.00 - This should level off with the new Intel i5 and i7's out

No as you see in the low end market AMD's plan is to have a processor at every $10 price point. As people buying procs there are trying to get the most for the least, having something every $10 can allow them to squeeze the most for the price. As it moves into the L3 duals you can see them break the $10 gap as that doesn't really matter, they then move to a $20 price gap to differentiate the procs and they also move up from 100mhz difference to a 200mhz difference.

Since this proc would be moving into midrange you can see it will just be a 100mhz increase and probably about $10 - $15 more. I don't see how you can "crucify" them for adding in a nice amount of low end processors. They are giving budget tight people a ton of options. The last new Intel proc for low end was the e5200, and even e7x00 series are still over a $100 when these low end duals are just as fast.

Only problem is Regor cannot unlock.
But none the less, they are still good procs.

Yeah, only the Phenom IIs can unlock. Athlon IIs can't.

This has to be the silliest statement I've read today.

AMD is playing catch-up and flood the market to grab publicity, and quite rightfully so. Intel, on the other hand, is being consistent with its product launches and announcements. Both companies are doing what is sensible in their market positions. AMD is attempting to nibble market share (Since they obviously cannot take it overnight), while Intel is trying to keep things simpler for the large OEMs planning product lines (Because that's where the money is).

Thats equally as silly. I already explained that AMD has no flooded the market place in a nice post right above. What they have done in the mid to low end market is very good. Fly is technically right, Intel has done very minimal work in the low/mid market, the i5 750 is going to be the cheapest proc they have released from their new lineup.

People like staying with current times, even if they aren't on the top of the rung. And when current times mean to be on just the bottom of the rung you must spend $325 or more for a mobo and processor alone, then people just end up running with another company that offers more. Personally I like going from the ground up, coming fro mthe sky down is a good way to flex your companys muscle, but in the end how many people actually buy the products.

I mean right now you can't tell me that spending $114 on an E7400 is better than spending $102 on a better performing PII 550BE. Actually the $77 PII Athlon 250 actually runs right with the E7400, $40 price gap for same performance. Its obvious that Intel needs to make cuts, or get the i3 lineup out soon, look at E8400 costs still.... you can buy a PII 945 for $2 more, thats ridiculous!

Yeah, only the Phenom IIs can unlock. Athlon IIs can't.

That's incorrect also. The Sempron 140 can unlock to a Regor. A Callisto can be unlock to a Deneb.

A Regor chip there is nothing there to unlock.

Just to make things clear, it is the Athlon II X4 that unlocks.
Callistos are Phenom II X2s.

Right, but he's also saying the Sempron 140 that isn't based on a Phenom II x4 (Deneb) can unlock to a dual core.

Whats there to unlock in an Athlon X4?

Didn't read me wrong with that. It can.

Riddle me this. BTW, every component in my system is AMD/certified, if the new i5 750 is only $210 and the 965 is $245, the 750 either ties or beats the 965 at every turn and can be overclocked to 4GHz, what the hell is AMD going to do??!! Flood the market, don't flood the market, who cares. I would not envy the position of saying my company rules the sub $200 market. AMD had better get it together or my Lian Li Spider case ( I said every component) is going to look silly with Intel Inside.

If your upgrading your AMD rig, O.K. for the selection, if your building new, Intel is slapping AMD around.

As one review put it, the new i5 should be called "coffin nailer"
