AMD Radeon R9 290x x2 Could Launch this Month

AMD has been working on a dual “Hawaii XT” based graphics card since late last year that would feature a combined total of 5632 streaming processors, 8GB of VRAM and 352 Texture mapping units. We first reported on this dual GPU behemoth back in November 2013, and even though the card is still only speculation, if the rumors are proved true it could be hitting the market sometime this month.

If AMD does in fact launch the dual GPU card this month it will come with a massive 375 watt TDP that will push all the power rails on the graphics card to their threshold. Dissipating up to 375 watts is no easy task either, so it will require a large heatsink, which will most likely be similar to the triple fan solution used on the previous generation Radeon HD 7990.

If this is released, I suspect the performance will be disappointing. A single 2-GPU card almost never beats two 1-GPU cards on performance/price, but the physics are working against AMD with this card. Hawaii in single GPU configurations consumes 300W, yet no previous GPU that made it into a dual GPU card has consumed >250W in its single GPU variant. This means that a dual Hawaii card will have clock speeds reduced even more than usual for a dual GPU card.

I just don't see how this can be made into an attractive product. With a 375W power limit it will have marginal gains over the single GPU configuration, and cards with higher power limits like the ASUS consume way too much power (500W) to be made into a mass-market product.

I feel sorry for the headache this might cause to GPU thermal engineers. Some poor sod has to design a reference cooler for a dual hawaii chip without a) being louder than a jet turbine on a jumpjet harrier, and b) keep the bugger below 95 degrees and thermal throttling.

Buy 2 decent 290X's and be done with it. Probably cheaper, cooler and more practical. And if your motherboard cant physically support crossfire, I doubt it has the capacity to fit the size thing thing will come in at.

Voodoo 5 6000. Never sold retail unfortunately.

Because the card used more power than the AGP specification allowed for, a special power supply called Voodoo Volts was to have been included with it. This would have been an external device that would connect to an AC outlet.

IMHO, dual GPU cards have never been practical, too much heat and noise, too expensive, and most times only around 80% as fast as using two separate cards.

Even on systems that don't support dual cards, dual GPU cards make little sense, as usually such systems have limited airflow due to using small cases 90% of the time, further causing these cards to overheat.

I've never had a dual GPU card, and barring a miracle from AMD or Nvidia, I don't expect that to change...
