AMD today announced availability of its Radeon RX 480 graphics card. The card is currently only available in its 8 GB variant, with the more cost-effective 4 GB variant touting the magic price-tag of $199 slated for July. The 8 GB variant being launched today will start at $229. Based on the 14 nanometer Polaris 10 silicon, the RX 480 takes advantage of the 4th generation Graphics CoreNext (GCN) architecture.

The chip features 2,304 stream processors spread across 36 GCN compute units, 144 TMUs, 32 ROPs, and a 256-bit GDDR5 memory interface, holding 8 GB of memory. At its given clock speeds, the card features 256 GB/s of memory bandwidth, although AMD claims DCC memory compression technology to effectively increase memory bandwidth by up to 30 percent in the best case scenarios. The core ticks at 1266 MHz, and the memory at 8 GHz (GDDR5-effective). The card features a TDP of just 150W, and draws power from a single 6-pin PCIe power connector. Display outputs include three DisplayPort 1.4 and one HDMI 2.0b. Custom-design cards could feature DVI connectors.

I did not understand why people were so overhyped for this card, and and I now do not understand how people are so disappointed. The 480 is exactly what AMD said it would be. It hit the performance target AMD said it would hit. It hit the price point AMD said it would hit. It is the current king of price/performance. Did people not realize this was going to be competitor of the 1060 and not the 1080?

Not a good deal at all. In a month 1070 will be its true 370 price and 270 for rx 480 will be quite bad.

 4 GB cards were available very early this morning and ran OOS very quickly at at least one e-tailer.

Agreed, but I'm definitely dissapointed in the cooler. The power is fine considering it's GCN, but unfortunately the 1060 will slaughter it there.

For me it's perfect. I have 3x 24" but I use just one for gaming, a X 480 is perfect for my needs so that's it :p Must people talk a lot about stuff they don't really understand. I am a pretty relaxed gamer, I play in 1080p, I can't care less about high, medium or ultra (it means nothing to me), so this card is just perfect for my needs. I can't wait till tomorrow to test it (just to see if it works) then I can focus on finishing the games I am playing right now. Maybe for others if you get 1000 FPS means something, but for me... it doesn't. I don't even know how I can explain how happy I am about this card it just suits me. And yes I can buy a 1070 but it offers me nothing that I need. Maybe you'll get it or you won't, have a nice day thou :p

Haha, this is hilarious. I've tweaked my GTX 980 and limit it to 150W. Clocked my memory to 8GHz. Bumped voltages few notches down. Want to know how much I got in 3DMark? 12425 points. Nearly identical to RX 480. Where the hell is all this "efficiency" AMD bragged about so god damn much? It's a good value for new buyers, but something just doesn't add up here. How can my old clunker with so much overhead within the core being such a huge chip, being built upon old 28nm tech and still performs the same as Polaris. Performance and power consumption wise. Ugh!?

My EVGA SC 1070 oc'd did 21000 in Firestrike...paid $419 from Newegg. Quite happy with my choice after seeing the 480 numbers. Yes the 480 is lower priced, but it's essentially last-gen speeds and not even in the same category. I wouldn't even want to game at 1080p with a 480. 1060 will be more in like with the 480, and AMD will need Vega to catch-up.

It just showcases the effeciency of Maxwell, really. Pascal is to Maxwell what Polaris is to ... whatever. Islands something something. Something something Islands. It's still GCN.

If someone does the same for GTX 10X0's cards, then we will see how much off RX480 REALLY is. Had RX480 used like ... say ... 130W or so and all this would be avoided but, using almost as much as a 1070 while being around 50% slower? It's price is it's only saving grace but shops are taking that away and the 1060 is just around the corner: if 1060 has availability, AMD is screwed.

At similar performance to the GTX 970 (and often times a little lower), I don't think it would be unreasonable to be expecting 6-inch long cards for the RX 480 to rival the well-known 970 Mini from Gigabyte and the 970 DC Mini from Asus. Until they do come out, there's nothing much to be interested in here. Stock cooler is absolute crap as can be expected from both Nvidia and AMD, card is way too long for what the PCB actually is...I'm assuming AMD wants to milk money out of their own version of the "Founder's Edition", seeing as no AIB boards are out yet. 8GB doesn't mean anything outside of Crossfire if it doesn't help the RX 480 decisively beat the 970 in large AAA titles like BF4, even at 4K.
