Seems like driver problems are causing inconsistencies. IE battlefield and farcry. Look at the R7 trading blows with the 2080, but every other game it's all over the place.

Buggy and unstable driver has been reported by many reviewers

Exactly, even Ryzen 1000 refused to start a total price war with Intel - and it was a vastly superior product stack. However Ryzen 3000 will probably go for a kill shot, and only because they will be able to make CPU's twice as good as Intel's for less money. Until that happens for Radeon, they will not even try - and that won't happen till 2021 at the earliest unfortunately.

However Navi may actually lower prices quite a bit, but only to where they were in 2012 at best - although they were pretty great then, huh? :)

AMD selling same die size and performance chip for up to half ?
Ryzen and Amd gpu's are two vastly different worlds.

Ryzen can compete with anything and be priced nothing with great profit margins even undercutting intel's entire lineup!
it's because of their Infinity fabric and scalability, Intel throws away chips amd can easily sell
Vega can only be sold at non profit, but I'd rather see them selling them at non profit than not at all!

I won't comment on the performance very much. RTX cards are very fast, so it was expected that Radeon VII will look relatively worse than Vega 64 did (Vega 64 matched 1080).

There are two more important things to take away:

1) The noise level is unacceptable
Is it the loudest card available today? Certainly near the "top". And it's an expensive, high-end model with 3 fans.
I wonder how AMD supporters feel about it? Do they think AMD lost contact with reality? Or maybe AMD simply doesn't respect their customers?

2) Many people kept saying that 7nm is the cure for all AMD problems. We get the first product and it clearly hasn't helped a lot.
Of course this node will get better over time, but AMD doesn't have time - Zen 2 is around the corner.

Those 100 cards for sale in UK look like 100 too many now.
NVIDIA kicking AMD's butt and at the same time their stock is plummeting.
I feel bad for both AMD and NVIDIA, I would hate for any of the CPU/GPU manufactures to go out of business and drop out.

Makes me wonder why they only allowed the REF model and did not allow partners to change the cooler.

lol, those lows are truly excellent
https://www.techspot.com/review/1789-amd-radeon-vii/
min fps lower than 2080 in 9 games out of 11 and lower than 1080ti in 6.

see that too

dunno where'd you get that min fps theory, nvidia has always been more consistent with them.

from Desktop to Crysis 3 , it consumes less than FE 2080.while Anno 2070 , 303w vs 224w
when you do UV , GPU boost becomes stable.

First thing I'll do is undervolt that baby :)

So, as expected. A lot of hype and not much improvement.
  • No support for DirectX Raytracing
I wouldnt hold this against AMD, not now at least. It will be worthy negative when we will have a lot of RTX games.

Also price here is.. equiv of 939 USD. Good luck selling one.. (not that there actually are ANY :D).

man I cant even get my shit together too start playing BF5 even though im die hard for the series , so ray trading
isn't even a issue . If the 300 bucks diff is true then that will go to a Free sync 144hz 32 inch monitor

It is worth mentioning that this is the first "top" model from AMD in recent years that don't come close to their Nvidia counterpart in performance, so in essence we can call this their largest fail yet.

Many people kept saying that 7nm is the cure for all AMD problems. We get the first product and it clearly hasn't helped a lot.

Yes, with AMD it's always the next big thing that will come and save them ;)

TSMC "7nm" is a very large die shrink, and should allow for some substantial gains. The fact that AMD seem to only get ~25% more performance is quite remarkable, and far away from their >40% goal. As you pointed out, many think the node shrinks will equalize the differences between AMD and Nvidia, but in fact, it will have the opposite effect, as more efficient architectures will scale even better. We also have to remember that this might be the last "good" node shrink in a while, and Nvidia haven't used it yet…

Yeah it's kinda sad people are already excited an undervolted 7nm part can get close to Pascal/Turing levels of efficiency. The hype was the original Vega 64 was going to give the 1080 Ti a run for it's money, yet here we are with Vega built on cutting edge 7nm tech with a whopping 1TB/s of bandwidth, and ultimately it stills falls short.

Ouch.

I'd still buy it. Reports seems that the power could be shaved off with a 50 to 90w on simply undervolting. For my purpose (1440p gaming) it should be perfect.

its true , I agree but in my opinion AMD are Producing CPU / GPU / Mobo Chips , geezuz they have probably bit a bit too much of the cake maybe ….??

Why? Undervolting or not, it's still not good value.
And undervolting will hurt your stability.

a proper UV won't hurt it.AMD cards do have proper voltage control.

It wouldn't hurt the hardware, but make it unstable over time, as long as the undervoltage is applied. All CPUs and GPUs have a marginal overvoltage to ensure stability as the chip degrades. You can of course choose to remove this margin, risking that the machine will become gradually more unstable until a point where you have to re-apply the voltage again.

Shame to see it land equal to a 1080ti in only the best case scenario. If it had matched it across the board, we would've had a 2080 contender. As it is now, meh. Its just not consistent and that is a big shame. Losing at 1080p isn't a big issue, but to have only Strange Brigade as an impressive result, is very weak and not enough to make it a compelling choice. DX11 is still dominant and barely even losing terrain, and that won't be changing soon.

I had expected it to land a bit higher.

Still, great review and very informative. The most interesting bit to me is the merit of 7nm. Pushing perf/watt up by over 20% is quite impressive, especially on this ancient architecture, and that is even considering this card has been clocked quite high out of the box. Will be cool to see what Nvidia can do with this node - and hopefully what Navi will do with it.

Seems like driver problems are causing inconsistencies. IE battlefield and farcry. Look at the R7 trading blows with the 2080, but every other game it's all over the place.

Nah, I think this is AMD pushing its resources where they think it counts. Far Cry was, for a long time, a hard nut to crack for them, so they've probably invested in it more than in the rest. Battlefield is similarly a title where AMD has been on the ball. Strange Brigade as well. There is no reason to believe the performance on every other title will radically change for the better - and even if it does, at some point in the future, its too late as usual.

Avoiding SE4 this time, eh? Lol. 39 fps vs 50s on V64 didn't look good, did it? Lows have been mysteriously missing, too (hint: Vega excels at this and nvidia is poo).

Come on, don't be a sore loser, don't spread BS to somehow create some sort of saving grace here - it doesn't exist and it doesn't help anyone, least of all yourself... I remember this one from Ryzen too... 'but the minimums' :D Please.

in virtually every review I've seen rtx 2070 oc is trading blows with RVII oc, at least at 2560x1440 or 3440x1440,and actually winning in many cases.
pcgh has it at 6% faster than 2070 in 21 games across 3 resolutions
http://www.pcgameshardware.de/Radeon-VII-Grafikkarte-268194/Tests/Benchmark-Review-1274185/2/

OC vs OC is dangerous territory with the RTX line, because we're looking at FE's with a higher TDP out of the box here... Not all cards have that, and its nothing to really rely on given the extent of GPU Boost these days on Nvidia. Its still a good observation, but I wouldn't think too much of it. Vega is much more tweakable than Turing - look at undervolt for example.
