AMD Ryzen 5 1600 as New CPU (16GB DDR4+any Board) as Companion to my RX590 replace i5 3570k

Hello everyone,

the AMD Ryzen 5 1600 is on Sale for 80-90€...

Got me thinking maybe replace my cpu/ram/mobo because it could hold back my replacement new gpu rx590

Is it a worthwhile upgrade to my i5 3570k very mild overclock as it is a bad sample cpu :-( /16GB DDR/Samsung SATA SSD) to add to my new RX590?

Buget is 400€< and spent as less as possible, need money for other stuff


CPU Gaming, Surfing, Office, some work like LabView, Matlab and Code in C
Motherboard would like to overlock but not hardcore (Stability is still key)
Graphics Card NONE i have a "newer" RX590 which i feel is enought
RAM 16GB DDR4 what ever speed helps the cpu
SSD's/HDD's NONE Got already 2TB HDD and 256GB SSD which is enought currently..may be a cheap SATA SSD as Games Grave
Case Mid Tower Zaria A20 which can house ATX and lower
PSU NONE Seasonic Prime Titanium 650W which is 1,5 years old
Monitor NONE Phillips 1080p 27" Freesync 60Hz (~75Hz) (Displayport)
Operating System None Have Win 10 pro
Peripherals None
Cooling Can i reuse my Scythe Mugen 2 Rev B. (should be Socket AM3+ compatible already) and just buy a mounting kit i think yes...

So, for cpu you can go with the 1600AF, not the 1600 from 2017. It is a newer version, costs about the same as 1600 but it is closer to a 2600, and has increased frequencies and better performance in general.
For ram you can go surely with 16 gigs. The best price/performance is 3200mhz cl 14 or 16 if you can't find one at a decent price.
For mobo you can go with a b450 from MSI or Asrock (Asus and gigabyte are generally good but for b450 segment msi and asrock are a bit better). You can go with the tomahawk (also the max version) or for asrock the steel legend. Both allow you to overclock and in the future you can always upgrade to a more powerful cpu.

For cooling if you can find a mounting kit good, unless Ryzen ships with stock cooler, but it is only recomended for stock use.

R5 1600 is a good choice. It will be better basically in everything if you consider i5 3570k. I think you can't lose with this upgrade. I'd consider going with 1600AF but not sure what price you will get for that one. It is noticeably better than 1600 and should cost same. Unless the 1600 is on sale now and that is why you are interested in buying one.
For the cooling, there is a kit to make it fit AM4 socket. Check stores I'm sure they have it.

Id get the 1600 and 16 gigs of 3000 c16.

Should be a good upgrade provided multi threaded games is what you're playing

Within 400€ you can also fit a Ryzen 3600 (193€), MSI B450 Mortar Max (95€) and 2*8GB 3200MHz (between 80 and 90€). All the prices are from amazon.de.

1600AF is the best option here not the normal 1600. The AF version is 12nm and overclocks to speeds similar to a 2600.

Another benefit is the 1600AF has the 2600 memory controller, so you will have less ram compatibility issues than if you bought the regular 1600. The 1600AF is basically the same CPU as a 2600 but at a lower price and lower starting clock.

Depends on how long he'd want to stay on the 1600AF. After all, he is on a processor from 8 years ago.

i'd get a x570 motherboard if you want to upgrade to a ryzen 4000 series cpu but thats my opinion,
because when zen 2 launched the older motherboards has compatibility issue
even though quite a lot of them supports zen 2 but needed a lot of patching and i cant remember correctly
amd axed most of the older boards that supported pci-e 4.0
so buying a x570 motherboard now gives you a better chance that it supports ryzen 4000
i wouldn't count on b350 supporting ryzen 4000, unless it was a high end one.
if you gonna buy and save a bit of money i'd get a msi b450 tomahawk because its a really good board and popular one too.
