To be honest I think the vast majority of people are probably still using 60Hz/75Hz displays. Higher refresh rate and resolution displays are becoming more afford tough in both segments however. I think AMD been moving in the correct direction to be fair it's making some headway on raising the minimum refresh rate standards higher while having a even bigger emphasis on resolution quality which is of more overall importance as whole especially outside of strictly gaming.
For the time being, high-refresh is at odds with HDR support. We need both of these properly supported (and affordable), before we can conclude we past 144Hz refresh rates.

Freesync (variable refresh rate) Premium (120+ Hz with LFC) Pro (with HDR) is a thing. What we don't get with those is strobed backlighting.

For any monitor purchase in the past two years that's primarily intended for gaming, it would have been foolish not to get FreeSync with LFC. The price difference between similar monitors with and without this feature is $25 or less.

720p benchmarks are not targeted for the vast majority of people - they are mainly useful (as I see them) for competitive gamers who play these competitive games that are usually CPU bound and are using monitors that have refresh rate of 144 Hz and higher, where 240 Hz monitors are finally maturing and they are becoming ever so popular.

Still feel AMD's moving in the right direction. Not everyone is willing to sacrifice everything under the kitchen sink for a 1:1 ratio 1000Hz display and 1000FPS minimum average in the 0.01% percentiles to play CS:GO.
