To sum up:
For absolute gaming performance 5800X3D or 12900KS. The budget is the limit - both cpus are 100% the best in gaming but it's meaningless to buy either of them for anything else. The 5800X3D is mediocre at productivity while the 12900KS is ridiculously more expensive against the 12900K.
For compromised, even slightly, gaming and productivity....all the other cpus.

The 12700K and 5900X are the best all around high end cpus.
The 12700/12700F for the price imo.

Very well done AMD, this is most likely what I will upgrade my 2700X to, since I do mostly gaming on this PC and stream from time to time and to just have a nice drop in upgrade regardless of the price is way cheaper then build/buying a new CPU/RAM/Mobo.

What people seem to forget is these CPU's and this X3D one are there for us already on the AM4 platform and for an easy drop in upgrade not aimed for brand new system builds. So if your going to compare it to some AL CPU you need to compare it to not just the CPU but DDR5 RAM (most likely) CPU, Motherboard and cooling cost compared to just the cost of a 5800X3D and when you then compare the two the price to performance is massively in AMD's favour.

I wish that was true. Its not. 12700f+b660 bazooka+ stock cooler cost the same as the 3d alone. Of course the 3d still loses massively in st and mt performance

Ummm really? it is true for me and most likely most of the planet, we dont count USA with there dirt cheap prices compared to everyone else, and 12700F and B660 Bazooka is $730, about $200 more then what the 5800X3D is going to be so sadly that just isn't the best option for anyone on a AM4 system already and again people keep forgetting, its a gaming CPU.......gaming! hence the Gaming performance and name :slap:

Also I forgot to add in the cost of Crappy Windows 11 ontop of all this just to have the AL CPU work correctly.....yeah no thank you!

Does the eco-mode work on it?

It should (as it's just limiting the CPU to 65W spec/84W PPT), but there might not be much of a point. The power consumption is significantly lower than the other Ryzen models because it doesn't peak v/f as high.

Ryzen Master was recently updated to support Curve Optimizer adjustment from Windows and add support for this processor, but core frequency control is disabled for the X3D.

Hi,
I'd be very tempted on a laptop sporting a 5800x3d
Someone mentioned an APU with 3D cache before, and the reply was that it was too niche - boosting the APU performance simply making the price high enough to get a dGPU instead

That said... game consoles?

Imagine the PS5/Xbox Series X APU with its dedicated GDDR6 but with the 3D cache on the CPU. That's the kinda chip that can be tweaked to an inch of its life, and then have the games optimised to benefit from the cache, too.

What are you talking about? the 12700f is 320 to 330 euros and the b660 is 150. So yeah, the 3d is stupidly overpriced even for current am4 owners. 450 gets you a fresh new mobo with modern features and upgradability plus a cpu that obliterates the 3d in both single and multithreaded performance

Like he said. Regional pricing varies. In my country 12700KF (K is even more expensive at 450€) is 415€ minimum and B660 is 155€ minimum. Total 570€. That's 120€ more expensive than 5800X3D.

Im not even sure where you got the 320-330€ pricing as the cheapest i can see in the rest of EU is 380€ with the motherboard being the same 155€. That's still 535€ and 85€ more expensive.

What modern featured do you mean? Expensive DDR5 that your selected motherboard does not even support? Because that would make 12700KF even more expensive with both motherboard and DDR5 cost to match low latency DDR4.

PCIe 5.0?
There are no 5.0 SSD's yet and wont be until the end of this year. Also no GPU's and even if there were they would not benefit from 5.0

The 5800X3D is great for gaming, nothing else. If you spend all your time gaming great. If not get a 12700k or 5900X
What is 5900X great for other than productivity applications?
Most people would not benefit from 12c/24t and would be better served by 5600/5800 models or 12400/12700.

And what do you mean 5800X3D is great for gaming and nothing else? It's functionally still 5800X - a modern 8c/16t CPU capable of handling most use cases. Sure people who want GREAT gaming performance should go for 5800X3D on 12900K. Those after GREAT productivity (especially if efficiency is important) should go for 5950X instead etc.

Some people acting like 5800X3D is a one trick pony with terrible results in everything but gaming. That is factually wrong.

I don't understand why everyone is so excited.
  • AMD is not the first company to have a massive L3 cache: Intel did that seven years ago with Broadwell which featured a massive 128MB L4 cache and showed crazy improvements in certain applications and games as well.
Yes they are the first to offer a commercial CPU with such a big L3 cache as you also say, ,, L4 off die isn't L3 on top of die

  • 5800X3D is a single experimental CPU which rocks in some games but loses in others and also loses in general applications which don't require enormous L3 cache due to decreased frequencies.
So far it is.
  • Very few people game at 720p or 1080p with their uber GPUs, and at 1440p and 4K most games are GPU bound and don't care about your L3 cache.
So you suggest and own an I3, f#£@ no you don't.
  • RPL according to the leaked information will feature an increased IPC for both its P and E cores as well as a significantly increased caches which means Intel will swiftly catch up and overtake this CPU and maybe even Zen 4.
Irrelevant, not out pointless comment
  • It's too effing expensive for what it offers, no, it's not $100 more expensive than 5800X, 5800X has been recently sold for as low as $350 which makes it a huge $200 difference. I got it wrong, sorry. Still we're only talking about rare applications and gaming at quirky resolutions.
And a 12900K or KS is cheap, to you perhaps.
  • This is the last hooray of AM4, there's no future upgrade path.
Jellosy bites eh.
Kudos to AMD for this experiment. Rare AMD fans who game at lower resolutions and those who like to boast about gaming benchmarks must be happy.
Rare Intel fans show just as much bias and boast just as much.

Buy from somewhere else then? I mean you realize that this shop has the 5600x for 340, which means the 5800x 3d will be 700+, so the argument still stands, right? RIGHT?

No, that's factually correct. For the price, the results are terrible in everything but gaming. It basically loses to CPUs that cost a fraction, so yeah

What modern features is X570 missing?

I didn't mention the x570. Plus i don't think anyone with a CPU worth upgrading to 3d rocks an x570 or an x570S.

Choosing 12700F is even worse as you're choosing a not overclockable (locked) CPU. Atleast in 5800X3D's case there's an argument that there is no choice to choose another V-Cache model that allows overclocking.

I did not see people complain about 5800X that launched at 450 too as being too expensive for the performance it offered. But now an improved version at the same price is suddenly terrible? Please. 5800X3D performance is still good outside gaming. Youre talking like it's unusuable outside gaming. I doubt most people would even notice the few percentage points of performance loss due to 200Mhz lower boost clock.

Or would notice the difference in a blind test vs 12700K outside games.
There are plenty of X570 owners like myself using 3000 series. In my case 3800X. 5800X3D will be good upgrade for me even outside gaming and cheaper than building 12700 based system on an inferior B660 motherboard.

The 5800X3D is a good CPU, but not the king of CPU's like some people are acting as if. It is nearly the last gasp of AM4 and unless you have a shitty CPU now imo don't bother and wait for AM5 as you would be getting something so much better. If you have $450 to piss up the wall fine buy it anyway. It's not worth ditching a perfectly fine 5800/900/950X for though just for x% more FPS. Chances are you will be switching to AM5, then what with the X3D, second rig, sell it on, not worth the hassle imo. But what do I know, i'm just a dirty Intel using peasant.

The 12700k is 50% faster in multithreaded tasks. So you are saying they wouldn't notice a 50% difference, but they would notice a 5% difference in games? I see, you are not at all biased :p

I did not see people complain about 5800X that launched at 450 too as being too expensive for the performance it offered. But now an improved version at the same price is suddenly terrible? Please. 5800X3D performance is still good outside gaming.
Thank you, that is a nice comparison. The 5800x cost the same, but it was actually way faster than the i9 of the time in single threaded performance (the 5800x 3d on the other hand is way slower than the current i9), it was equal in multithreaded performance (the 5800x 3d is getting obliterated). So yeah, the 5800x was okay priced in comparison to the i9 10900k, the 5800x 3d is a joke compared to the current i9.

The 12900K is a hose job when you have the 12700K/KF and 12700/F nipping at its heels for far less.

I have a 5600x with 3800 cl15 at 2T ram and a 6900xt and play bf2042 mostly with my gpu usage dipping to 70% at times. Would it be worth it to get the 5800X3D?

For me you could hold off the last bit of your statement.

It's Just the king of gaming, no more, for productivity a 5950x is the best, and while I agree it is not worth anyone using a two year old CPU or better to buy necessarily, it's ironic coming from someone already on the latest AL to be saying.

My previous was imo shitty. I only have the AL as it was gifted, if not i would probably be slotting one of these in the 450 board i had with the 2600x.
