Thank you @W1zzard for this in-depth review before the release date. Your information was able to help me decide on my CPU upgrade.

Was able to run a -50 to the curve with PBO2 tuner, which is stable for 12 hours in Core Cycler. Cinebench scores 15050-15200 and knocks 8-12c off temps. Since we don't currently have any access to Curve optimizer for 5800x3d in bios, the PBO2 tuner software works nicely, though -50 is the max it will allow. With -50 on all cores, voltage is between 1.145 and 1.165 in the multi-core cinebench run; single core voltage sits between 1.11-1.113v and all cores reach 4550.1MHz.

Playing around with PBO2 Tuner some more; with the -50 all core curve and using the same settings I use with a 5800x in another system for the power values: 105w PPT, 80A TDC, 110A EDC. Cinebench values drop ever so slightly to the 14900 mark, but also drop another 4-6c in temp. Not going to mess with the max boost setting.

Updated bios to 4201 beta on my Dark Hero x570. They significantly dropped the stock all-core clock speeds in, what I think, is an effort to reduce temps, and likely stop throttling for users with lower end cooling solutions. All stock settings Cinebench score is 13800-13900 on the 4201 bios, but jumps back up to the 14900-15000 mark with the -50 all-core curve optimizer setting in PBO2 Tuner.

Indeed undervolting/underclocking can see huge efficiency gains and temperature reductions. That's not anything new to anyone in fact overclocking can see performance degradation when pushed too far.

410£ the 5800X3D
495£ the 5950X
360£ the 5900X

it’s still too difficult to decide…

I purchased the 5950X and a few minutes later I canceled the order.

I made the mistake. Here it is...

I've looked at both myself.

however the gains I will see at 3440x1440 won't be that great and I don't really need the extra 4 cores the 5900X will provide so while very tempting I think I will save the cash to upgrade my 6800XT to a 7800XT :)

Though the 5800X3D is good for Gaming. Using it side by side vs the 5950X is underwhelming. The issue I see is on my 165Hz panel 200 vs 195 FPS means absolutely nothing in Gaming. Having said that it blows away any of the budget CPUs but is too expensive (I know that they sell as many as they make). Like Makaveli my next plan will be to buy a 7800XT (from AMD's website to get the best launch price possible).

I have a problem with the 3D's performance.

In cpuz I got ~610/6100 score while the single core clock is at 4450 and the all core at 4250.
About the same in Cinebench, having 1000 points less than in reviews.

I don't have any temperature issues although the 3D is extremely hot, taking into account that I have custom water cooling.
I've updated the BIOS 2 days ago.

Is it a bad part? RMA?

More out of curiosity than anything else - what are your temps under full load?

Your RAM has slow timings and you didnt go above 90W on the CPU, either you're on an old BIOS or you've got custom settings limiting it

70C is not extremely hot. It's barely hot at all.

@gffermari its not a bad cpu by your posted score, could be some setting or software running a inbetween load in the backgroung.
A 5800X scores ~10% more for about 10% more clockspeed( single threadedly).

LE: As I currently have it set up, I've changed the cpu fan to another and its running the same fan profile to now @~250rpm from a 2000rpm one with allcores on. CPU cooler is a 120mm fan compatible air tower cooler.
Attaced screenshot.

Indeed. My 5800X3D goes to 90c with a 420mm AIO. Now that's what i call hot. Tho this obviously only happens in allcore workloads but those are rare for me (if they were not i would have gone with 5950X instead). In games i rarely see anything above 70c.

I'm guessing some motherboard setting is limiting performance. Possibly TDC, PPT, EDC?
It cant be too old of an BIOS - there this CPU would run as base clock (3.4Ghz) and not boost properly at all like what happened to me.

Initially when i got my 5800X3D i flashed the newest BIOS for my X570 Master but i made the mistake of restoring an old BIOS profile. Because i did not want to manually re-enter all timings etc. As it turns out this profile had a custom vcore setting. But since this value is hidden with 5800X3D it screwed up the boosting algorithm and it was stuck a 3.4Ghz.

Only after clear CMOS and painstakingly re-entering my custom settings was i able to get everything set up. Since 5800X3D does not show vcore value i was unable to reset it in an old profile. For that i would have had to unmount 5800X3D and put back my old 3800X. Then edit this profile and save it and take out 3800X again. I figured it was faster to re enter all values manually and create a new profile instead.

70 degrees under full load on cpuz, 73-74 on Cinebench R23 on loop mode.
(I have 3x240 rads although 1 of them is slim rad with slim fans under the gpu)

@Mussels
Yes my memory is Corsair Vengeance 3600. One of the worst out there. I haven't tried to tweek the timings. I just pick the DOCP.
I had a new bios (supporting the 3D) before the cpu installation but checking it 2 days ago, there was a newer version.
And I put it on. I'm on the latest now.

I'll try closing everything. Yes I have hwinfo, razer, logitech, AI suite, dropbox etc. on the tray.

I have a X570 Impact and after installing the 3D, most of the PBO and other settings, dissappeared.
I don't know if there's anything in the BIOS that I can change.
Pic of my rig right before installing the 3D. A huge mess....

You should be able to change PBO settings. Since im not ASUS user i cant comment on where exactly these are stored. If i had to guess they should be under AMD CBS section somewhere. You may have to switch from PBO Auto to manual to see them.

The only settings that disappeared on mine were related to vcore.

Some P states and boost clocks may not work correctly unless you update your motherboard chipset driver. Sometimes this may have been overlooked when the BIOS is updated.
Also make sure you are running the latest updates with Windows on 10 and 11.

@gffermari I am not familiar with this particular mobo, but it should be decent enough to let you use full potential of your CPU.

I'd generally recommend putting the latest UEFI, resetting all settings, save and exit. Then, enable DOCP profile for the mem, and cherry-pick (enable) only those parameters that allow maximum auto OC e.g., thermal and power limits, PBO, etc.

Then plop Windows from scratch but only install drivers and OS updates. Who knows what AI suite and the rest are doing to your system?

Then we should have a good baseline to work with.

I know it's inconvenient, especially if it's your main rig but...

Edit: I recommend Win 11 (and CSM disabled of course).

As came up in another thread i posted, some simple mobo software can tank your CPU performance 10% or more.

Make sure nothings running in the background.
