Guys I have a few CPUs I'm looking to grab some half decent air coolers for and I'm wondering you opinions or what your actually using yourselves...

I'm looking at some BeQuiet coolers, I think there's a few options around the 160w to 250w setups.. I'll have to find the names of the coolers...

Middle tier?? BeQuiet Dark Slim 180w
Middle high tier?? BeQuiet Dark 4 200w
High end?? BeQuiet Dark Pro 4 250w

Any other suggestions of what to go for?? I've got some 1700X's and 2700X's to keep cool under 100% loads and I'm not talking CineBench R20 either lol

I'd just buy the cheapest one, those CPUs are going to dissipate something like 150W at worst when overclocked and no where near that stock.

Thanks guys for the recommendations.. The Freezer does look somewhat interesting as at the price (I see it's about the £30 to £35 over in the UK from a quick Google search...) it might well be the best option for price/performance Might get one and try it

Very much the same consideration here... There's always too much black in some builds these days, I'd like to make something a little well, different

The 2700X runs hotter than the 1700X in my experience. I'd put at least a mid tier air cooler on it for constant 100% load.

It did say on the Freezer page that it needs the backplate for the AM4 setup, but I'm guessing that's the one connected to the board that I can re-use?

Yes, there was also this in the Technical data about compatibility: " * The length of the backplate screw nuts is different on some AMD AM4 motherboards. You can get a free compatible backplate on request from us. Please send us a message with the subject 'Freezer 34 - AM4 Backplate', the shipping address and proof of invoice to support@arctic.ac."

I've seen them on Amazon for about £25 for the cooler, I thought it was definitely worth a look at that price. I'll give it a go.. What could possibly go wrong??

I'd give this review 10/10.
Unbeknownst to me, they had the same contenders to the roundup I was contesting between budget coolers. I was reading up on hardware.info guides to make that distinction, so both know their hardware immaculately.
The thing of note is, these high efficiency parts only do so well when the heat is low. They have superior thermal transfer coefficients that outdo even water loops. Both 65w and 95w, according to 115x lists. However, if you are using 2011 hedt cpus, efficiency goes out the window. Then, you have to account for how much heatpipes there is present.

Take a look at the Cryorig R1 Universal 240 W+ TDP

Are you going to be crunching with them phil?

if so then I would consider the best cooling you can reasonably afford, as they run hot on a 24/7 load that and comparatively loud.

I made this. Any contenders I leaved out? Freezer Duo is not all that more expensive than the rest, and quite possibly, the one with the best fans.

Apologies for my lack of replies here all But, I do have an update on the whole cooler thing

I did manage to buy two of the Freezer Duo coolers, I have been nothing but impressed.... But. I did feel their usage slightly limited on the CPUs that you could use it for but that's not a bad thing I think considering the price for it, that's kinda to be expected as well.

Why do I say that? Well when I tried it with my 3900X at stock everything, doing on simple run in CB 15, I saw temps rise to 85C whilst it was doing the test. For me that's a touch too warm even though I think that the idle temp was somewhere around the 30C's It really did go up high... However, something that was a little more of a shock to me was the Noctua 14D I have doing the same thing managed to hit about 80C so only a 5C difference when it came to the same test.. Kinda surprising if I'm honest considering the price of the 14D but 12C 24T in such a tiny package, I do wonder what a 3950X would be like at stock everything with the same coolers.. (I'm tempted to see if I can find one but that might be a little while away sadly....)

However, when testing my 1700X's and even so far my 2700, they have been nothing but brilliant

Running my 1700X with WCG with it setup for my Mrs and in a case as well, I've yet to see any CPU load temp over 60C (more like 56C from PSensor in Linux) and that's from 18 hours crunching constantly Since we have nothing but wind and rain at the moment, the heating is on which isn't helping the temps so much but even still, its yet to head over the 60C mark. Again this is at stock everything, no tweaking of any sorts (8C 16T for games like The Sims I'm not sure I need to start overclocking it )



One thing that I did notice and thought that it might not be helping the situation of the cooling temps was the size of the base plate that the heatsink sits on... Having compared it to my 14D, there was a fair bit of a difference in and I was pretty sure that this would have definitely been a contributing factor to the temps... As shown below -



I'll see if I have a screen saved result for the 3900X with the Freezer Duo.. It doesn't take much when you look for it... Here tis!!



First one is the Freezer Duo and the second is my 14D... Slight increase due to the clock speeds holding slightly higher for longer I guess, but nothing massive I don't think.. I sadly only tested with R15, but I think the R15 Extreme or R20 as it's a little longer of a test might helped with the temp test I was trying to do.. I just thought 85C and I was out
Here's the Freezer Duo with my 2700 (I need to get the testing done on the 2700 and then I can swap it out with the 2700X and see what's what )

Wonder if changing the orientation of the heatsink base the other direction (fan facing the graphics card) would make a difference?

Mind you, there is only a single configuration for this standard mounting system.

I could give it a go as currently it's not held down in place with the AM4 mounting system, so it's a possibility but I do wonder with the correct mounting system if that would be possible??

Indeed, really impressive results for a cooler that it's so slim even with a pull->push setup, pretty good job keeping that chip chilled!

Also worth to mention, SUCH A CLEAN build, excellent cable management, specially at the back, great job! (can you get rid of the HD bays since you're not occupying them? it will improve even more the cooling)
