AMD S939 Dual Core FX-60 2.6Ghz still very expensive

AMD's Dual Core FX-60 at 2.6Ghz is selling at upwards $300 on Ebay. Why? Sure it was a great processor back in it's day, but it is old technology. Perhaps it is because there are so few of them left. Still, why not put the $300 into a new CPU/Motherboard?

some people wont/cant upgrade and will pay a premium for the chip.

Another thought is maybe AMD makes the price really high so people will have to switch to AM2

(I got my FX62 at Newegg a month ago for $150)

Maybe because it's the best processor for a skt939? If you were to get equal performance on an AM2 system, you'd have to spend quite a bit more for the mobo and ram.

i bought a 6000+ cpu one mobo and 2 gigs of ram for similar money.. a 939 4800+ also fetches big money.. its not just the FX factor.. there are some silly people out there..

I'd be willing to spend up to $50 on a new processor for my skt. 939 motherboards. After that, you really have to look at cost vs. performance. I'd say that if you can find a dual core skt. 939 for $50 or less, you're good.

It is because it is socket 939, and the best available processor for socket 939.

There are a lot of people that don't know how to tear apart their computers or don't have the confidence. A lot of people that bought pre-builts that want to upgrade, but don't want to buy a totally new computer.

$300 gets you a equally or better powered system, including 4GB of RAM.(2.6GHz 5000+ BE, M2N-SLI, 4GB DDR2-800)

again, great responses. the reason why im sorta bitching is because i want this processor but i dont wanna spend $300 on it. hah. my next project is to simply upgrade the CPU/GPU for $400 total and then build a brand new system from scratch by the end of the year. that way i have a decent backup PC and one for friends to play on if need be. i guess maybe ill get the 2.4Ghz Opteron 180. its only $115 !!

i did buy a new am2 mobo and a far better amd cpu a 6000+ .. 3.350 without the slightest problem on any mobo plus 2 gig of 800 ram for the same money..

come on guys its a f-cking joke.. no way on this planet does it make sense to upgrade 939 to the same standard as am2.. if it did i would have..

one 6000+.. one cheap mobo.. two gig of cheap ram.. 3.350 gig as easy as that.. all for the same money as the silly 2.6 gig ancient FX60..

i sold my 939 mobo.. memory with my single core sandy chip at 3 gig.. upgrade cost not a lot..

You said before that the cpu doesn't really affect games and other things that are more dependant on the gpu. Why spend $400 on a new cpu/ram/motherboard combo that is just 500 mhz faster? I wouldn't spend $300 on a skt. 939 cpu though...

yep i did.. but every couple of years i feel the urge.. it follows a predicable pattern.. do i need to upgrade.. nah.. but i usually do.. but after two or three months of spending more than i can afford i stop..

Top of the line of old hardware resells for more than it's worth always.
I sold a socket A, AMD Athlon XP 2.1GHz for $85 + shipping three months ago on ebay. I had bought it 3+ years ago for $110 when it was already outdated.

CPU and RAM upgrades are the relatively easiest upgrades that provide the best performance-per-dollar for old systems. Why upgrade via an overpriced, old component?
