They marketed it everywhere but I'm guessing it was about as successful as everyone expected an SSD/HDD caching software to be. I don't think the vast majority of Ryzen users even know what it is.

Intel had SRT (Smart Response Technology) from 2011, it was basically the same thing, and next to no one used it except maybe in some laptops. By the time 2017/2018 rolled around it was basically dead and superseded by Optane caching, which itself is now dead.

I'm pretty sure there are two versions, the original StoreMI (licensed from some other company) and AMD's own version of StoreMI. Situational at best, dangerous to data at worst.

I was hoping to use it to speed up access times to one of my larger hard drives that I use for long-term storage.

HDDs are staring to finally fade into obscurity vs SSDs in consumer products, that's what happened and thank God for that.

Well yes, but for mass storage, HDDs are still king. I'd dare you to find a reasonably priced 12 TB SSD. Good luck.
