AMD has finally surpassed NVIDIA in terms of shipments of discrete graphics (graphics cards), according to market research firm Mercury Research, in a report released on Wednesday. AMD's discrete graphics products held 51% of the discrete graphics market, with NVIDIA slipping down to 49%, in terms of discrete graphics products shipments in Q2 2010. For the same quarter last year, the two were poised at 41% for AMD and 59% for NVIDIA, indicating a significant growth, fruition of AMD's DirectX 11 push of deploying a new-generation lineup that spans all price-points in a span of four months.

For the overall GPU industry, with integrated graphics included, the picture for Q2 2010 looks like Intel holding 54.3%, AMD holding 24.5%, and NVIDIA with 19.8%. Last year, in Q2 2009, NVIDIA held 29.6% versus AMD's 18.2%. NVIDIA's deployment of a DirectX 11 compliant GPU lineup has been rather slow, with only two GPUs and four SKUs deployed so far, starting at $199. NVIDIA does not have the fastest graphics card. On Wednesday, the Santa Clara based company warned that its revenue would fall short of earlier projections (set at the time of Fermi's launch). This announcement came after Apple announced a series-wide transition of graphics chips inside its Macbooks, iMac, and Mac Pro computers to AMD's ATI Radeon from NVIDIA GeForce.

Matrox have been out of everything except those multimonitor setups in the past 10 years. They have som stuff in large setups (industrial things and whatnot) but for home users they have nothing. Especially now when eyefinity is up and running.

If AMD are only 2% ahead after their DX11 products have been out for so much longer and NVidia have now mid/lower mid products in the market that more than compete, I would guess that the roles may well be reversed in the next quarter.

As for Nvidia having nothing to compete????? What's the bet that the 460 takes a vast amount of sales away from the likes of the 5830/5770 and perhaps even the 5850?

If I'm not wrong....couple month ago ATi has issued to launch HD6XXX in 2010...maybe if that realy happen, ATi would growth they market share and left Nvidia for far more...

Eh? Their DX11 cards started shipping Q3 of 2009. Comparing Q2 '09 (41%) to Q2 '10 (51%) they've gained 10% since. Trailing by 10% to leading by 2% in less than a full year is not an "ONLY" thing here.

It's "only" 2% most probably because Nvidia's flooding markets with their "new" G 210, GT 220, GT 240, etc.

I agree with the above statement. Across the web, everyone is impressed with the 460. I, personally would choose it instead of the 5830... the 5850... well, it has CUDA. It's a tough fight. I think I would choose the one that I find on offer...

Yes but in perspective, during a large proportion of that period, ATI had the only DX11 products coupled with the fact that they had saturated the mid/lower mid (where 90% of all sales are) with new innovated and efficient products so my point simply was/is, you would almost expect them to take 4 out of every 5 sales in any case acknowledging as you have pointed out a 12% shift but within the market conditions at the time and the lack of competition I am not too exited by that.

While I'd probably sell myself to have either e GTX480 or a 5970 as I'm impartial to both I'm hoping that the next reiteration of their cards are even faster :D

Matrox coud'nt compete back in the days with the Geforce 2 / 7500/8500 from Ati, basicly Matrox was superiour in 2D quality, lacked fast 3D. You'd play unreal tournament with it but that was basicly it.

^ Personally i think that's going to hurt Nvidia alot as Mac is growing like wild fire lately and doesnt look like slowing down. Honestly i can see AMD continue to grow from here for awhile yet.

Nice that they can catch up in market share.
Anyone know what the market share ratio is currently?
Last I heard, which was long ago now, it was round ATi ~30%, nVidia ~70%.

EDIT: Nevermind... seen the numbers. That's what I get for reading just the headline then comments... :ohwell:

not to mention ATI being used in two of the 3 current gen consoles (wii +360)

its not like nvidia is going to vanish overnight, its just that ATI is slowly gaining market share and making it an equal playing field.

Indeed very good point there.

Yea nvidia will be still a very strong competitor that's for sure, just the roles will be reversed for a little while, but for how long is the question?

Indeed very good point there.

Yea nvidia will be still a very strong competitor that's for sure, just the roles will be reversed for a little while, but for how long is the question?

6 months, tops imo.

but once thats said and done and things go back into balance, ATI will be higher than it was before this leap up occured (example: if they were 20% market share, now they'll be 25%)

Good to see, but also, what happened to Matrox? Surely they have some market share as well? Or am I misunderstanding something here?

Probably Gaming Graphics, Professional Graphics is another category

Nvidia still has nothing in the mainstream market this really doesnt surprise me. We will see if it is even profitable for Nvidia to go down into the mainstream market with fermi...If they can shrink those chips with the GF106/108 and get them in the mainstream market they will pull ahead next quarter.

If AMD are only 2% ahead after their DX11 products have been out for so much longer and NVidia have now mid/lower mid products in the market that more than compete, I would guess that the roles may well be reversed in the next quarter.

As for Nvidia having nothing to compete????? What's the bet that the 460 takes a vast amount of sales away from the likes of the 5830/5770 and perhaps even the 5850?

that is why the green team has 49%
