AMD to introduce "4x4"

4x4 will be a new initiative from AMD, geared towards the enthusiast. It will be a dual-core, dual-processor plattform, with which AMD is trying to keep the performance crown. Each socket will include an AMD Athlon64 X2 chip in a new AM2 socket and will be connected using AMD's "Direct Connect" architecture, which already provides a dedicated channel from each of the CPU cores out to the system memory, and to each other. Due to the nature of the Direct Connect architecture, each CPU can access the other's dedicated memory store. The 4x4 architecture will use unbuffered, non-ECC DIMMs and AMD's "Pacifica" virtualization technology.

That is certainly what it sounds like. But it would be cool to be able to do this with the board not meant for servers, like socket 940.

Quad-Core (via SMP & DualCore cpus) & extensible architectures (co-processors wise) certainly sounds really good. I would love to own such a setup personally, CPU-wise!

(Maybe one day in the future I will, but it's a good 4 years away because I just put the machine together I will be running until then around a month or so back & it's a good "internet hotrod", or good enough for me until then & I'll probably keep it around as a 2nd rig anyhow)

lol I'm sure it won't be that bad. Besides, you don't have to fill both sockets right away. You can start out with 1 and then go to 2.

Anyone know if you mix and match cpus? Like 2 dual cores at different clock speeds? Or maybe 1 single core and 1 dual core? Just curious...

i read a test with that setup dual/single core, but it doesnt work well, some appz go a bit faster, and some don't even start on a system like that..
i dont think that there is software developed for a setup like that.

btw, 2 dualcores must use a MASSIVE amount of power don't you guys think???

maybe we will have PSU's as big as an case itself in the future
