We have a new microarchitecture under development and the first substantiation of that will be the quad-core to be launched in mid 2007,
said Dirk Meyer, AMD's president and chief operating officer. AMD is working on a new architecture, which includes L3 cache, 32-bit instruction fetch, dual 128-bit SSE data flow, dual 128-bit loads per cycle and "true quad-core" meaning it will contain four separate cores on a die. In the meantime, AMD has plans to release a chip for the enthusiast market called the 4x4, which links two dual-core processors using AMD's fast hypertransport link to get quad-core like performance. AMD has said that product will be promoted by the holidays in contradiction to the Core 2 Duo processors.

Good - it sucks if one side stays superior for too long, although 4x4 seems to be a bit of an SLi for CPUs, i.e. as a single entity, the tech is inferior so double it up to stay in touch

You know what the best part is? If they can't beat the other with technology, they beat them with price! Consumers win!

That might work for Intel (one of those P4 EE's only cost them 45USD to make) but AMD can't take a hit like that, anyhow Intel is finacialy unstable right now because of being under AMD; massive price cuts and probvaly not selling there stock of P4 and PD; I would buy AMD or ATi stock right now because if they do merge; Bonanza!

there are already some conroe quad cores out there amd has to compete with it core against conroe core if they cant beat them they have to lower prices

. . . Intel is going to beat AMD for price to performance ratio for the next few months.

Have you actually looked into Intels finances? They are not unstable. I'm pretty sure They could drop all the P4 sales and be fine. AMD has alot of old cores sitting in retail too and they are not "Financially unstable." AMD is doing the same thing Intel is doign and always have done, you drop prices of the old stuff. I would not buy stock in AMD or ATI until this merge thing is over, because even they do not know how it will quite work. AMD can not afford to straight up buy ATI, so they have to merge if anything.

I am interested to see how this AMD chip does and compares to Kentsfield.

L3 cache too? A return to the AMD K6-III @450mhz architecture

See my subject-line/title above:

This is a return to yesteryear in a way - much as the AMD K6-III @450mhz used to be on the old "Super-7" motherboard series (ASUS had them, others too probably). By Bearing an L3 cache onboard the mobo!

QUESTION: Is this L3 Cache on their CPU itself, or the mobo?

(The article doesn't say)

:)

* It was a good thing imo, & I had one - stable as hell (not the fastest thing going, but it was a good arrangement on the setup I had @ least).

APK

P.S.=> By the way, AMD has bought out ATI, see here:

http://www.amd.com/us-en/Corporate/VirtualPressRoom/0,,51_104_543~110899,00.html

From what I read a few days ago, it will be a merger, but we all know the deal on those (usually, one of the two "merging" companies is actually the takeover'ing one... controlling it, & that's AMD)... apk
