Anyone here know how to make those little animated avatars using a short clip of video taken with a digital camera?

You can use any tool that converts .avi to .gif

...just that you can't use such avatars here on TPU.

its best that we dont have animated avatars..
will take a lot longer to load the pages for some people

It's anyway prohibited. I was just reminding him. Yes, certain other forum sites have people with animated sigs, avatars they look shabby and take long to load.

Its not alowed here though Danthebangoman uses it.
One doubt here.
You guys are saying it will load slow but there is a size limit so isn't really going to be the same as a single pic.[the meaning of slow loading:- the loading of a page on a 128Kbps connection with utorrent running in the background doing 10KBps(=80Kbps)]

I hate animated things because this is a forum, and the posts should be central, not anything else (like "lulz look at my awsome flashing huge sig"). Especially here as this is a tech forum.

Either way they're not allowed. Nor is it open to discussion. Though Google for gif animation. There are plenty of solutions available.
I recall Paintshop coming with animation shop, it could load avi and save gif.

ulead GIF animator is a fantastic tool in making neat gifs, it can take video and covert it to gif.
