Hi guys, I've tried looking around for a solution to this problem but after trying the various ways others have used. Usually if I can't fix the problem myself I can find a solution on the net somewhere, but i've found no definitive results so far.

I already know about the conflict with CoD4 and Realtek HD Audio onboard devices and have enabled to the Stereo Mix to counter this.

Basically, as with many others, my Call of Duty 4 started acting up in the past 2 weeks. I bought a new system a couple months ago and the game has been fine at max settings but all of a sudden it would freeze my system with the irritating "TRRRRRR" sound loop.

The only way out is a hard reboot.

One thing to note is that after this happens a couple of times I have had an error message at the initial BIOS loading screen stating (along the lines of) "The Previous overclock has failed. Please press F1 to continue or DEL to enter setup."

I've no idea why this is showing up as I have not overclocked the computer at all, in fact when it first started I assumed it was the video card overheating and downclocked the card with EVGA Precision to no avail.

Here's what I've tried so far;

- Downclocked my video card
- Uninstalled 3d vision drivers
- Uninstalled nVidia HD Audio drivers
- Double checked BIOS is on default by loading the default settings
- Cleared CMOS
- Reformatted my system
- Redownloaded & reinstalled latest drivers
- Switched DIMM slots around (1 & 3 // 2 & 4)
- Run the game at a range of video settings
- Lowered sound quality to 11khz (low) & 22khz (medium) in-game
- Uninstalled Realtek drivers, allowing win7 to install its own
- Set power settings to Max Performance.

There was one solution I found which I was unable to test as my BIOS Voltage/Frequency settings are "locked" by the manufacturer. This was to check the voltages for the ram, as it may be that they are not receiving enough power during high load scenarios and would "run out of steam". Using CPU-Z I found that the voltages are 1.500v for JEDEC #1 through #4 on both DIMM slots. However, finding the optimum voltages has been a bit troublesome too as Kingston have no recognition of the ram on their website and I had a little trouble finding specifications elsewhere too. Any thoughts on whether this could be the issue?

I tracked the GPU through GPU-Z while playing last night and the card never got any higher than 62C. At the point of crashing I had the following results;

Date: 2010-12-14 05:50:54
GPU Core Clock [MHz]: 549.6
GPU Memory Clock [MHz]: 1665.0
GPU Shader Clock [MHz]: 1339.6
GPU Temperature [°C]: 60.0
Fan Speed [%]: 32
Fan Speed [RPM]: 2700
Memory Used [MB]: 399
GPU Load [%]: 36
Memory Controller Load [%]: 13
Video Engine Load [%]: 0
VDDC [V] 1.000

What baffles me the most about this is that the problem did not exist until the last couple of weeks. Everything was running fine but is now consistently crashing at random intervals even though I have not changed any hardware, have not overclocked any of the hardware and have not changed any software up to, and including, the OS. Yet multiple users, using completely different setups are having the exact same issue (runs fine for a period of weeks to months and then sudden crashes on same system).

Well, I've run a dxdiag (x64) for you guys to have a look at too, perhaps there are clues in there.

Thanks in advance for any support you can offer.

i added some spoiler tags, that long ass DXdiag is likely useless.

i think you were right on with the memory voltage being the culprit - if you cant adjust the voltage at all, you're going to have to specifically find memory that runs at 1.5v

with experience with these kind of issues, its usually hardware and not software. In your case: somethings overheating, or somethings bad. Likely causes for overheating:

CPU, GPU, northbridge on motherboard

likely cases of bad (or in the case of the memory, set wrong in the BIOS): Memory, slim chance of graphics card.

Thanks for tidying it up :-]

I don't suppose you could recommend any decent software to track the temperature's on CPU (CPU-Z v1.56 doesn't seem to be tracking the temperature?) and NB?

Also, if you know of any software so i can measure the ram's current voltage, that would be great, as I'm not sure if Speccy measures the current voltage (1.500v seems a little too well rounded for specifics) or, more likely, it indicates the stock voltage settings. If it is the latter then I would hope the BIOS is already preconfigured to 1.5v but I'd like to double check it all the same.

Thanks again for any advice.

I've just downloaded PCWizard to monitor all the voltages and frequencies and tried out CPUID HWMonitor too, neither of which seem to be able to track the voltages of the ram..

I'm not entirely sure how much this may affect the frequency monitor on the CPU but its only tracking 2 cores? the i5 650 is a quad core @ 3.20Ghz. However I'm getting readings jumping between 3.4 - 3.5Ghz. If the CPU monitor is actually tracking the correct frequencies (even though only tracking 2 cores) could this perhaps be the route of the problem?

Knew I should've just built another machine instead of getting a ready-made :/ all the fine details are hidden/locked/inaccessible >.<

That really IS a dual core CPU not a quad core one. It only has two cores but 4 threads 2 for each core. So the number of cores is not the problem. The frequency variation is the result of the Turbo-Boost technology which goes up to 3,46GHz. I think the problem lies in the memory somewhere or the software side (OS/Game). I had a pair of nenories that only gave errors lockups and BSOD-s in dual channel, memtest was OK with separate modules.

Try with only one RAM if you can, if you don't have a warranty sticker on your case which breaks if you open it.

yeah figured the hyperthreading part after making my last post. I've not messed around with the memory yet though but I will give that a try too :-] thanks

Well, I've just spent some time messing around with the memory. I've now tried Dual channel setup in Dimm's 1 & 3 as well as 2 & 4, I tried single channel in Dimm's 1 & 2 then in 3 & 4. Finally I tried each stick seperately, running only 2Gb, in each Dimm slot and the results are across the board.

No matter the setup, I crash after approximately 15 minutes of game play.

As i mentioned in my original post, this was not an issue for the first few months and has only cropped up recently. Also, there are alot of other people having the exact same issue and under the exact same circumstances

Finally, I play other, far more demanding, games with this setup and have never had any issues with crashing, etc.

I'm not entirely convinced it's a user end issue. If I were the only one (or one of a handful) having this problem then yeah I would assume hardware/software on my end too. But the fact that this seems to be a fairly widespread issue with alot of different machines/hardware setups I can only assume that the game is the issue as it is pretty much the only common factor in al cases. I'm going to head over to IW n see what they have come up with on the matter so far.

Thanks for the advice guys, appreciated.

'more demanding' is often a logic trap, cod4 may be so easy on your GPU that the higher FPS uses more of your CPU,causing the crash (whereas 'more demanding' games are GPU limited, and therefore use less of your CPU)
