Hello Folks,

ive tried to recreate the issue so i could record it, and of course, now it wont do it :(

I have been noticing an odd issue since getting
that when i sit down, and start typing, or touch my Metal KB drawer, or the KB itself, the static that has built up in my body, causes the KB to turn off, then back on. All the lights & functionality are off, for about 1 second, then it comes back on as normal (but not in its normal boot up sequuence, it just comes back on , like it had never been off.

im curious if there is issue with the KB, or if this is normal for static discharge? i have never had this happen, but i DO know for certain, it never happened before i got this Desk. If its nothing to worry about, ill ignore it. I have since put a small plastic cutting board under the KB to see if it stopped the issue, and sure enough it does, so it seems as though it is the metal drawer.

the KB in question is predominantly aluminum, and plastic, but the body/case is almost entirely metal.FWiW
TY for Your feedback

You could try attaching a small wire between the kb drawer and a leg on the desk to ground it.

i actually just touched the damn leg when i was leaning over it, and it did it there too :shadedshu:

Video of the issue, the weird thing is, it takes the TINIEST shock, in the Vid, you can hear the Static, but when i touched the leg, it was inaudible....im going to RE-contact Azio, is this a common thing?? i have never had this happen.

No issues with my wireless (steel/aluminium alloy) keyboard. :)

I have a general idea of how to do it, but I'm not gonna pretend like I have a plan in mind , so what would you do? Just get one of those ground plugs you plug in an outlet, with a connector (like an anti-static strap) and attach it to someplace on the desk that's metal?

can i attach a wire, to the desk, and then to the Screw on an electric outlet (the one that holds the face plate on) and use that?

im guessing this would work?

need help from our electrically inclined members please

You would need a pipe ground clamp or self tap screw a power plug with ground on it and you can use flexible copper/aluminum wire.

Break or remove the hot and neutral terminals off the plug to prevent shock. Attach wire to plug at ground terminal,

Selftap or clamp wire to a leg, make other ground straps if necessary

?? What bout this, i imagine it would suffice? All that's left is the ground on the male end, and then I took one of the prongs from the other side and stuffed it into the ground on the female end. It's a power supply cable from a 650 W seasonic power supply i believe

Yes it is extremely both. I normally will leave a pot of water boiling on the stove for several hours a day but I normally don't have issues with it except that I got a new desk which is entirely glass and steel and it's basically like a conducting a rod.

I looked at what a grounding probe is and what I linked in the picture above is essentially that except homemade and free. All it is is a ground plug that feeds to a second ground plug and if I were to alligator clip that to my desk it would be grounded 100%., Unless Im missing something or that won't resolve the issue I'm experiencing

I agree with Norton. Glass is a great insulator. That is great in some circumstances but not here. A small wire from the keyboard tray to a metal leg may help, but frankly, as Jetster noted, you need to discharge your body before sitting down. So running that small wire to the front of the desk and getting into the habit of touching it first before sitting down should do it. Perhaps attaching that wire to this you touch first. If you run that wire to a screw on the back of your computer case, that will sure do it.

And it can be a very be a very tiny wire too since there is almost no current in static electricity. However, you MUST ensure your case is properly grounded to your wall outlet and that your wall outlet is properly grounded to Earth ground. Get an AC Outlet Tester. If it shows a fault, have the outlet repaired by a certified electrician. Then check all the other outlets in the house too - especially those near water (bathrooms, laundry room and kitchen).

Where is your computer case? Touching the metal case first might be enough (assuming the case is properly grounded). I say "might" because you will not be touching bare metal of the case unless you can easily touch the unfinished back (or a thumbscrew) of the case. Just avoid touching near a connector.

Again, the the trick is to get into the habit of discharging your self every time.

You might also look at a piece of anti-static carpet under your desk - one large enough to step on before you reach your desk.

You can buy anti-static spray but over time, it can get expensive. We used to mix our own anti-static spray. You start with 1 tablespoon of liquid fabric softener to 32oz of water in a spray bottle. Shake well before each spray. If it still does not work, increase ratio to 2T/32oz up to 4T/32oz. But note over time, residue will build up on the carpet that does not feel good on bare feet. This is why you start with the smallest ratio first. Even plain water will do, but of course, it evaporates.

And you certainly can get a small room humidifier. These are effective. The better ones let you set the humidity target. The better ones also tend to be more quiet.

You really need some sort of permanent solution to keep static at bay because our bodies can build up destructive levels of static just by squirming in our chairs.

I took the cable that you see in the picture above and plugged it into a power strip, I was wondering if attaching that to the desk would work , but i have now learned that i would have to touch it, to discharge myself. it works , which is good, but id like to stop the static all together. I have found that the Static really only presents itself when i come in wearing my sweatshirt, and take it off (if i leave it on, it generally doesnt happen), once i have removed the sweatshirt, i can hear the static as i remove my arms from the sweatshirt, and that is pretty much the only sure fire way i can make it happen. ill likely go with a humidifier, and hope that helps. since its mainly the sweatshirt, im going to see if leaving a fabric softner in my pocket will stop the issue.

thanks for the help.

Your on the right track now, it's you that's the cause routinely charging yourself taking your top off before touching a metal keyboard grounded to your pc via its cord ,to me not wise static can be very high kv range voltage that even without much current can kill electronic devices as the lights on the keyboard are showing you , personally whatever it takes id stop this happening.

It's mostly the fast discharge of static that kills stuff ,most esd protection has a resistive load in circuit to slow down this dissipation to a manageable level , to be rid of it you could get an esd mat for under the keyboard ,they normally have clips to attach further things and you to as well as a plug to plug into the mains(contains resistive load), tie the mat desk and plug into the circuit and this wont happen again.

Although I'm electrically ignorant and have very little experience with charges etc. I can say for certain that I never had this happen with my old computer desk(cheapo particle board w/ black paint), it literally started happening the first time I put this new desk in.

The glass desk is isolating your keyboard, therefore it's only earth is via your pc which goes straight to ground as it should ,hence the zap, esd protection needs that resistance i mentioned to work ,but you couldn't put a resistance in a safety ground.

Glass is a bit unique in this respect. Static does not build up "in" glass, but on the glass surface. But that really does not matter here. You don't want that voltage traveling through wires going into your computer case.

I guess that's an argument to get a wireless keyboard and mouse!

it literally started happening the first time I put this new desk in.
And it may be totally due to the wheels/feet on your new desk isolating it.

I would love to get some input from @Corsair George on this.
Here is my hypothesis: (Warning, I am not a professional. Proceed at your own risk:p)
Your old desk acted as an insulator, and I'm guessing you didn't have a keyboard tray?. Therefore, any static that you had went through the mouse or the keyboard. I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't designed to handle this and to send the static back through the ground. Since your new desk has metal parts, the static (at 20-25,000 volts) jumps through the insulator for the keyboard cable causing the disruption. I also wonder if your mouse is turning off at the same time, indicating that it might be how the motherboard handles a static discharge on the USB bus.

You could test this by isolating the mouse and keyboard wires from the metal parts of the keyboard tray.

the old desk did have a KB tray, but it was wood , just like the desk. the mouse does not turn off when this issue happens, only the KB. i have since created a grounding plug for the meantime, until it becomes less dry in here. it only seems to happen with larger static discharge, like when i remove my sweatshirt or coat.

It's just odd because I've had this keyboard in more than one home, and I've had it on a few different types of desk ,and I've never encountered this issue. Obviously my main goal is for it not to become damaged as these keyboards run over $150 ,i really couldn't care less about the static part , it doesn't bother me. I just don't want anything to become damaged. I have tried insulating the keyboard by putting it on rubber or plastic , even using the same material that's in the mouse pad , & nothing works. the only thing that does help is if I ground myself and then touch it

I have tried insulating the keyboard
I'm saying the SD is jumping from the keyboard frame to the keyboard cable. You might be able to solve this by grounding the keyboard frame.

@thebluebumblebee
you were right, i made the ground plug i created connect to the KB's metal frame, and as you can hear in the video, it worked.

?? What bout this, i imagine it would suffice? All that's left is the ground on the male end, and then I took one of the prongs from the other side and stuffed it into the ground on the female end. It's a power supply cable from a 650 W seasonic power supply i believe

Yes that would work, just with static build up on us we need to discharge at times.
